Matheus Cunha has received a message from Lisandro Martínez after the new signing made his unofficial debut for the club against Leeds in pre-season.
Manchester United drew 0-0 against Leeds in their opening pre-season friendly of the summer on the weekend and Matheus Cunha started the clash.
It was quickly made obvious that the ex-Wolves star will provide some much-needed bite and intensity to United’s attacking play and he was close to potentially scoring on a couple of occasions.
That didn’t end up coming before he was substituted at half-time, like the rest of the first-half eleven, but Ruben Amorim would have been happy with what he saw from the Brazilian.
The Reds now prepare for their US tour, where Bryan Mbeumo will join up with the squad for games against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.
Martínez sends three-word message to Cunha
While Cunha will be hoping to get on the scoresheet as soon as possible, he has explained that he felt ‘blessed’ to don United’s shirt for the very first time on Saturday afternoon.
Reacting to his debut on Instagram, the new signing posted: “Blessed ! ❤️🔥 What a feeling to wear this shirt and have my first minutes with the boys, hungry for more. Thank you.”
In response, Lisandro Martínez commented, “Sos un toro 🐂”, which translates to “You’re a bull.”
That does seem like an accurate representation of Cunha, who is not afraid to drive forward with his aggressive ball carrying.
While Martínez and Cunha have not played together on the pitch, they seem like two players who will get on well with a similar attitude and quality. The Brazilian has been at Carrington with Martínez, who is still recovering from his injury.
Cunha and Martínez should link-up well
One of the major factors in Cunha’s game is his ability to receive the ball in those pockets between the opposition defence and midfield.
Interestingly, the wide centre-backs in United’s system are best equipped to be able to feed passes into those spaces as they step out with the ball at their feet.
Martínez’s ball-playing has been a standout attribute since his own arrival in the summer of 2022 and so it would make sense that he builds a strong relationship with Cunha on the pitch as well.
United uploaded images of the defender in the gym at Carrington on the weekend and he is working hard to return early next season, with reports suggesting that he could be on the training pitch before pre-season ends.
