Lisandro Martínez explains “surprise” Manchester United trait that caught him off guard in 2022
Lisandro Martínez has explained a trait that surprised him when he signed for Manchester United under Erik ten Hag in 2022.
Since signing for Manchester United in the summer of 2022, Lisandro Martínez has become one of the most respected and adoring players.
Erik ten Hag chose to bring the Argentinian centre-back to Old Trafford from Ajax for a fee of around £48 million that summer, with some questioning whether a player standing at 5ft 9 inches could compete in the Premier League.

However, in the two seasons that followed, the World Cup winner dispelled these doubts and became an integral cog in the Dutch manager’s system at Old Trafford while becoming a complete fan favourite.
In a new interview with La Nacion, Martínez was asked what world he discovered when he joined the club, to which 26-year-old explained he had a strong sense of United’s glory.
“When I set foot in United’s training centre in Carrington, I felt something special,” he explained.
“’We’re going to win here,’ that’s what I felt. Like electricity, a strong energy of glory… something that motivated me a lot. ‘This is a place to win,’ I told myself.
“Well, we’ve already won two very important titles [the League Cup, known as the Carabao Cup, and the FA Cup] in two seasons, but we have to keep growing to reach our goal, which is to become what Manchester has always been, one of the very great teams, one of the best in the world.”
Further, he was asked what about the club surprised him, to which he replied that he was taken aback by how much respect United have and keep regarding their history as one of the greatest clubs of all time.
“They have a lot of respect for their history; they have a lot of respect for their legends. They keep their past alive. I feel very identified and represented in United, especially by my values.
“It is a club where unity and commitment are evident on a daily basis. It is a club with which I connect a lot with my way of being.”
