“Lesson learned” – Bruno Fernandes makes promise as huge Portugal fixture approaches
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has assured reporters that he is “not worried”, as he sets out to get revenge on club teammates Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Højlund and Patrick Dorgu.
Fernandes, 30, is one of several players away from Manchester for international duty, with the Red Devils captain set to play Denmark twice over the course of this week.
With both matches forming part of the UEFA Nations League knockout stage, the first of Portugal’s two matches against Denmark has already taken place. That match saw a goal from Højlund help to secure a 1-0 victory for the Red and Whites.
Now, with a place in the Nations League semi-finals at stake, Fernandes has commented on what he feels his national side must improve on ahead of Sunday’s reverse fixture.
What did Fernandes say to reporters?
Speaking to Portuguese outlet RTP following Roberto Martinez’s side’s defeat to Denmark, Fernandes acknowledged that it was one area in particular that Portugal fell short compared to their opponents.
“I think it was a little lack of aggressiveness,” Fernandes explained as quoted by Ojogo. “We didn’t make good use of the space that Denmark left”
“We are always aware of what we are capable of doing. It’s not worrying at all, but it’s a lesson of what we have to do differently in the next game.”
“There is a few [days] left, but we will have time to watch the game, try to explore what we have to do now in the next game. Obviously they with the result in hand, will probably make a game a little different, but we have the full ability to reverse this result.”
“The results do not change the confidence of this team, nor what is the ability we have to win games and we will do everything to win the next game.”
What’s next for Fernandes and Portugal?
Fernandes, alongside fellow club and country teammate Diogo Dalot will be expected to once again start against Denmark on Sunday evening.
During Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark, both players started the game – with Fernandes playing the entirety of the game, whilst Dalot was substituted after 66 minutes.
For Denmark, there will be hope that after scoring off the bench, Højlund will have done enough to secure a place in their starting eleven. Meanwhile, fellow Reds Dorgu and Eriksen will also be expected to feature once again.
