One of Rúben Amorim’s possible changes to his starting XI has already been reported as Manchester United prepare to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
With the October 2025 international break now concluded, Manchester United resume their Premier League campaign with a visit to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
Rúben Amorim’s side sit 10th in the table after three wins from their first seven matches, but there’s quiet confidence within the camp as they prepare to face a Liverpool team enduring a dip in form under Arne Slot.
After opening the league season with five straight victories, Liverpool have suffered three consecutive defeats in all competitions — against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, and Chelsea. Both domestic losses were decided in stoppage time, while the trip to Turkey ended in a 1-0 defeat.
United, buoyed by their 2-0 win over Sunderland before the break, will hope a strong performance at Anfield can provide the platform for a consistent run of results.
Yoro to start against Liverpool
After his impressive debut last week, Senne Lammens is expected to start in goal for the Reds on Sunday afternoon, with Amorim hinting on Friday afternoon that he wants to see the Belgian continue in the side.
As for the back three, Amorim will likely choose to start Leny Yoro on the right-hand side, with Matthijs de Ligt in the middle and Luke Shaw on the left.
While Slot has previously admitted that Liverpool have a weakness in set pieces, which would lean toward Harry Maguire’s skill set being useful, the quick feet and speed of those such as Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak, and Hugo Ekitike would be better nullified by Yoro’s talents.
In midfield, it has been leaked that Manuel Ugarte is under consideration to start on Sunday ahead of Casemiro, a choice some may find bizarre. The latter had tended to step up more often in big games than Ugarte, but after being given an extra day of rest, Amorim may see Casemiro as not sharp enough.
It’s expected that Bruno Fernandes will partner Ugarte in midfield, with Amorim likely keen to play different talents across the front line.
The wing-back pairing Amorim chooses will reveal how defensively safe he wants his side to be at Anfield. While Diogo Dalot is available to start, if Amorim wants his side to play a more dominant style of football, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Amad are the two most likely players on the flanks.
In attack, there is little doubt that Benjamin Šeško will start at striker, having scored two goals in his last two United games before the international break.
While Bryan Mbeumo is set to play on the right of the front three, it may be Mason Mount who starts over Matheus Cunha on the left. Mount was brilliant against Sunderland and combined well with Šeško, and this partnership may be key against Liverpool.
Cunha could then instead be used as an attacking threat off the bench in the second half of the tie, with Amorim hoping his side can both start and finish strong on Sunday afternoon.
