Leny Yoro agrees with Rúben Amorim on his biggest difference compared to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United
Leny Yoro has agreed with Rúben Amorim on the most significant difference between Erik ten Hag and the new Manchester United head coach.
Rúben Amorim’s first two and a half months at Manchester United have been anything but straightforward since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
Appointed in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to stabilise and rebuild a club in disarray.
There have been moments of promise, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains a major issue. Under Amorim, United have won nine of their first 19 matches, suffering eight defeats and drawing twice.
Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as demanding. Three senior attackers have left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements coming in, while Lisandro Martínez faces the prospect of missing the rest of the season with a knee injury.
However, there have been positives. United finally addressed their need for a left wing-back by signing Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven arrives as a promising prospect for the future.
The biggest difference between Amorim and Ten Hag
Ten Hag was sacked as United boss following a 2-1 loss against West Ham in October, although the decision was a result of an accumulation of poor performances and negative results during the opening months of 2024/25.
Following the Dutchman’s departure, many reports explained that communication had been a big problem for Ten Hag, with the players sometimes unable to understand his instructions.
When Amorim joined, he was asked how he felt coming into a club like United as such a young manager, to which he replied that he sees it as an advantage as he can communicate and relate better to the players.
Leny Yoro signed for United in the 2024 summer transfer window but suffered an injury in pre-season, meaning he was never able to play a competitive minute under Ten Hag. Speaking with former United defender Rio Ferdinand, Yoro has agreed with this point from Amorim.
I spoke a lot with him,” Yoro said of Amorim during the head coach’s initial days at United. “I had a good relationship with Erik Ten Hag, a good relation with Rúben Amorim, so for me it’s good. I just try to do what he asked me to do.
Continuing, Yoro said: “He’s a lot in the communication with the players, because he played in top levels, you know, he did a lot of clubs, so he knows your feeling when you are not playing, or when you do bad games, you know, he knows how to speak with you, and it’s really important for me.”
What Amorim is like in training
Amorim has said a lot about how necessary training is to him and his squad, and Yoro has explained that the 40-year-old is a rigorous trainer, but that the club are better for it.

“You know, the training is really, I would say, hard,” Yoro continued. “It’s important, you know, because we don’t have a lot of training.
“And for him, the training is really important too, because you play in the game like you train, you know. So, the most important thing is to be really good in training.
“And if you are not working, if you are a lazy guy in training, he will kill you. But it’s normal because, yeah, you play like you train.”
