Leny Yoro makes position stance clear as Ruben Amorim could opt for Manchester United switch up vs Brentford

Leny Yoro has made his position stance clear as Ruben Amorim could opt to switch things up in the Manchester United back three against Brentford.

Manchester United have had a stop-start opening to the Premier League season, winning only two of their first five games.

Ruben Amorim’s team claimed a vital win over Chelsea at the weekend, adding to their narrow 3-2 success against Burnley earlier this month.

But defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City, along with a draw against Fulham, have underlined their inconsistency. A humiliating Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town has only added to the frustration.

After last season’s disastrous campaign, these early stumbles have kept the pressure firmly on Amorim as United approach a key period in their season, with Brentford next up.

Amorim could switch up United defence

United’s win over Chelsea was important and there were several standout performers in that game, with Matthijs de Ligt being the most impressive player.

The Dutch defender had started all Premier League outings in the middle of the back three beforehand but started this clash on the right side of the back three.

His aggression in the press and ability to win duels was very useful in that role and it could be something that Amorim looks to continue with against Brentford, with Harry Maguire starting centrally.

Leny Yoro was rotated out of the team last time out but has also been one of United’s brightest players so far this season and Amorim will want to fit him into the team.

While Amorim does like to have at least one fullback playing in the wide centre-back roles, he could test out De Ligt, Maguire and Yoro in the back three, with the Frenchman playing from the left.

It could be a move that brings more defensive solidity to the team and Yoro has also already made his feelings clear on playing from the left.

Yoro played as the left-sided centre-back many times last season under Amorim and his ability to drive forward with the ball from that space was impressive.

Despite being right-footed, the 19-year-old enjoys playing on that side of the pitch and has previously told club media that he does not mind which side he plays.

“Honestly, I like both, you know,” Yoro explained to club media earlier this year. “On the left, I can go ahead with the ball, and in the right… Of course, in the left, sometimes you need to use more your left foot, but… It’s not really a problem for me, so… I feel good in both.”

After De Ligt’s impressive performance from the right, it seems like Yoro could be set to return to the left side in place of Luke Shaw in some upcoming games.
