Leeds United have reportedly enquired about one former Manchester United Academy star after Rúben Amorim expressed interest in the player.
Manchester United are preparing to reshape their squad this summer after a frustrating season and the setback of missing out on European football.
Rúben Amorim has been prioritising a move for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and has already secured Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, though any additional signings will hinge on generating funds through player sales.
Multiple departures are expected, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia among those who could be moved on, although finding buyers remains a challenge.
Jadon Sancho is closing in on a switch to Juventus, while Alejandro Garnacho is also likely to leave, with the Argentine keen to continue playing in the Premier League.
Once at least some of the above players have been moved on, United will look to sign a new striker and midfielder, although a fresh goalkeeper has not been ruled out, either.
Leeds looking to leapfrog United for Milinkovic-Savic
Earlier this summer, it was widely reported that United were looking at the potential of signing Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who used to play for the club’s Academy.
The Serbian shot-stopper was contracted to United between 2014 and 2016, but was eventually released after they failed to secure a work permit for him.
According to Italian transfer specialist Alfredo Pedulla, United’s long-time rivals and freshly promoted Premier League side Leeds United are now interested in the player and made an enquiry about his availability on Monday evening.
Pedulla further clarified that Milinkovic-Savic has a release clause of just over £17 million that can be activated by clubs outside of Italy, but that it must be triggered by the end of July.
United more likely to buy a second-choice goalkeeper
While it is certainly possible that United might sign a new goalkeeper this summer, it would more likely be a second-choice shot-stopper if Altay Bayındır were to leave the club.
As exclusively revealed by UtdDistrict back in May, Amorim is happy to continue with André Onana as his first-choice option despite his mistakes last season, as the pair have a good working relationship.
According to The Athletic, United have expressed interest in Botafogo’s 29-year-old goalkeeper John Victor, who would reportedly be available for around £5.8 million.
There have also been previous links with Aston Villa’s No. 1, Emi Martínez, although it’s understood that these links have been more agent-driven rather than stemming from any significant interest from the club.
