Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce after an agreement was reached between the two clubs.

The Reds have made signing a left wing-back a priority this January, as Ruben Amorim navigates a challenging start to his tenure.

Injuries have left United short in this position, with Luke Shaw struggling for fitness and Tyrell Malacia only recently returning from a 17-month knee injury layoff leaving Diogo Dalot to fill in on the left side.

Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu emerged as United’s top target after impressing scouts last year. The 20-year-old Danish international is a versatile, attack-minded option well-suited to Amorim’s system.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United have agreed a £25 million deal with Lecce, and Dorgu has already settled on personal terms with the Old Trafford club.

Lecce teammate compares Dorgu to world class defender

Many of United’s fans are not familiar with Dorgu and are looking forward to seeing him in action for the club.

One of his current Lecce teammates Nikola Krstovic has provided a general comparison to AC Milan star Theo Hernandez, who is considered as one of the best left-backs in Europe.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “[Dorgu is] a bit like Theo [Hernandez] although Dorgu is more attacking.

“He’s an incredible player when you think he’s only 20. He gets better with each day. He knows how to play in multiple positions: up front, at the back, on the right.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play in goal. All jokes aside, he’s a very good player.”

United missing attacking threat on left side

United have not only been missing a left-back in recent times, but one that can provide a threat going forward. That is even more important under Amorim.

Dalot’s defensive abilities are not the major issue when he plays on the left, but instead his inability to provide a threat in the final third.

The Portuguese international has consistently been given the ball in dangerous areas on the left but he is unable to create chances.

That is also why Malacia is being used sparingly despite returning from injury. The Dutch international is better defensively than he is going forward.

Dorgu excelling in attacking play is the exact type of profile that United need on that left side, which has already got United fans excited about the deal.

After securing his signature for a modest price and on low wages, it appears to be a deal that ticks a lot of boxes for this current United team.
