Kieran McKenna has explained the style of play that Manchester United fans should expect should he become manager, with INEOS no doubt listening.

Over the last 24 hours, it has emerged that current Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is a genuine contender to take over Erik ten Hag at Manchester United next summer, should the Dutchman be relieved of his duties.

Many names have circled the management position at Old Trafford with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team yet to give a definitive answer as to if Ten Hag will stay or leave at the end of the current campaign.

A large factor in INEOS’ decision concerns whether the new co-owners feel Ten Hag could deliver the style of football the club will produce from now on. The group is looking for other head coaches who are better capable of catering to their demands.

With that in mind, McKenna’s potential contribution to Old Trafford, should he be appointed, is an intriguing prospect. In an interview earlier this season with The Telegraph, he explained this to United fans.

“My principles are really, really strong, and I don’t think I will ever go away from them,” McKenna explained.

“I believe in trying to play football a certain way. It’s not just about playing out from the back or pressing high. I want my team to be excellent in all aspects.

“We take a lot of time going through the details that might seem minute but, over the course of time, will add up to making us a much better team. I am steadfast in my principles. I will always want my team to be pro-active to try and dominate games.”

A lot of what McKenna explained fits in well with INEOS’ system. They are reported to want a man who is strong in his playing principles, able to be more of a head coach than a manager and work within their system.
