Key moment vs Leicester City showed Bruno Fernandes’ leadership at Man United
Manchester United were comfortable victors at Old Trafford against Leicester City on Sunday and Bruno Fernandes was one of the best players on the park.
The Portuguese midfielder registered two assists and created several more chances for his teammates on the day.
However, it was yet again his leadership skills that shone through in different parts of the game.
This was particularly shown in the aftermath of Jadon Sancho’s goal, which Fernandes assisted, where a subtle moment showed what United’s no.8 is all about.
After a great one-two with Sancho, who slotted the ball away expertly, the Englishman came over towards Fernandes to celebrate with him.
Bruno gave Sancho a small hug before pushing him towards the corner flag in order to have his own moment with the fans before being bombarded by his celebrating teammates shortly afterwards.
It might seem like a small detail – and it is – but it’s always wonderful to see that Fernandes wants his teammates to get their glory. It’s even better when you know everything Sancho has needed to overcome to get back to this point.
We also saw a similar example earlier this year after the win against Manchester City.
Following a post-match interview with BT Sport on the pitch, Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were two of the last players to walk towards the tunnel.
Despite winning the Man of the Match award, Bruno pushed his teammate in front of himself, urging the Stretford End to give their appreciation to the match winner Rashford.
These are small indicators to remind us how much of a true captain Bruno Fernandes is. Erik ten Hag hinted towards making the midfielder his permanent captain soon.
“First as captain, he’s an example on the pitch with the energy he puts in, and for our tactical approach in both the transition moments,” Ten Hag said when speaking about United’s no.8. “Bruno is so important for this team. He’s a great example for everyone in the squad.”
After the win on Sunday, when talking to MUTV, the manager added: “For me, today Bruno Fernandes was brilliant. Best player on the pitch.”
