Alan Shearer has named Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes in his Team of the Week, as opposed to two of his fellow Reds.
During the Premier League’s early kick-off on Sunday, Manchester United travelled to Selhurst Park to face a very tough task in Oliver Glasner’s high-flying Crystal Palace.
Ruben Amorim’s side went a goal down in the first half after Leny Yoro conceded a penalty to Jean-Philippe Mateta, although the Reds managed to complete a second-half turnaround to win 2-1.
Thanks to goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount, both assisted by Bruno Fernandes, United managed to win against the odds, which has seen them climb to seventh in the table.
The two assists in United’s victory over the Eagles have earned their captain a spot in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week, despite other United stars also putting in commendable performances.
Shearer snubs Zirkzee and Mount
Despite a poor first-half performance from all of the United XI, their efforts picked up in the second half, with the likes of Mount and Zirkzee especially putting in fantastic shifts.
The pair’s efforts were rewarded with an excellent goal apiece, although it was their captain who was praised for his performance.
In Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week, he said regarding Fernandes, “The captain was key as Manchester United made a big improvement in the second half.
“He set up both goals for Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount with a couple of clever free-kicks.”
United’s underrated ace
Since he arrived at Old Trafford in 2023, Mount has struggled with injuries tremendously, which have stopped him from showcasing his abilities.
The English midfielder signed for a fee of £55million, and over two years later, against Palace, he has finally completed a full 90-minute game for the first time in a United shirt.
Mount has been gradually improving this season and has scored vital goals against Sunderland and Palace. He looks to be providing solid competition to United’s new boy, Matheus Cunha.
Over the summer, United spent around £200million on attackers who have taken much of the limelight, which has left Mount’s reemergence to go under the radar, despite his impressive cameos.
