Juan Mata tells Rúben Amorim what he must do about Marcus Rashford – “It will be a win-win”

Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United looks bleak after he was shunned from the first-team squad by Rúben Amorim.

Manchester United are preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer after a disappointing season and with no European football on the horizon.

Rúben Amorim is expected to use his transfer budget on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, though any further additions will depend on player sales.

Several exits are anticipated, including last season’s loanees like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, but finding buyers has been a challenge.

Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho also look set to depart, with Sancho closing in on a move to Juventus and Garnacho keen to stay in the Premier League.

What is the latest on Rashford’s United future?

Last week, news broke that the five United players mentioned above, including Rashford, had all requested to leave Old Trafford this summer, and that they had been given extra time off to seal their moves away.

However, it then emerged that this had not gone down well with some of the players and their representatives, as their camps disputed the information.

Later, journalist Henry Winter, who initially conducted the explosive interview with Rashford back in December, where the winger suggested he wanted to find a new club, claimed that the player had not asked to leave United.

Elsewhere, it has been claimed that Rashford is set to hold a fresh round of talks with Barcelona this week, with the English forward now an option for the La Liga giants after missing out on Nico Williams.

Mata urges Amorim to reverse Rashford decision

Despite the developing situation at the club that points towards Rashford’s exit, former United midfielder Juan Mata has urged Amorim to keep Rashford at the club.

Mata is very familiar with Rashford, having played together over 100 times between 2016 and 2022. Notably, this includes Rashford’s stunning Premier League debut against Arsenal in February 2016, where he netted a brace in a 3-2 win at Old Trafford.

“I saw his first training [session] with us. I love him. As a kid, I called him ‘the wonderkid’,” Mata told The Athletic. “The way he played was fearless, you could feel he could win a game by himself at any time when he was playing at his best.”

Continuing, Mata said: “As a Man United fan and as a friend of Marcus, I wish that he can succeed here because it’s his club, his boyhood club.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen but if he stays and he can actually be happy and enjoy, I think it will be a win-win situation for both the club and him.”
