Jose Mourinho managed Manchester United between the years of 2016 and 2018, winning the Europa League and EFL Cup in the process.

Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Manchester United was a mix of highs and lows, but he remains the club’s joint-most successful manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

‘The Special One’ brought a sense of swagger back to United upon his arrival in 2016, signing key players like Zlatan Ibrahimović, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in his first summer window.

In his debut season, he secured two trophies, the EFL Cup and the Europa League, before adding players like Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matić, and Victor Lindelöf to the squad in 2017.

However, by December 2018, his tenure came to an end as strained relationships with the ownership and squad rendered his position untenable.

Mourinho reveals ‘incredible’ next career move

Mourinho had spells at Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma after his Old Trafford departure and is currently at Turkish club Fenerbahçe.

He joined the Super Lig side in the summer and has even faced off with United in the Europa League, securing a 3-3 draw against his former side.

The manager has been open about his future and most recently revealed that he wants to take charge of a national team for a major tournament.

Mourinho believes it would be an ‘incredible’ experience after turning down the likes of England and Portugal earlier on his career.

“Yes. I want to play a European Championship or a World Cup, to unite a country around its national team in the same way I have managed so many times with clubs and fans,” he told Italian publication Corrieredellosport.

“I want to do it for football, for what this sport represents. It will be incredible.”

Amorim explains admiration for Mourinho

Current United boss Ruben Amorim has explained the admiration he has for Mourinho, his fellow Portuguese coach, after taking the job at Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old worked a week-long internship at United under Mourinho as part of a university course in 2018.

“He is a very experienced person. The greatest impact on me was how he dealt with me,” Amorim said of Mourinho, as per UnitedInFocus.

“He showed me that he can win everything. He opened the door for many of us. He was very important for us. We knew his teams would win. As Portuguese football fans we started to believe.

“It [the internship] was very interesting. He invited me after I completed the postgraduate [High Performance Coaching] course [at Lisbon University] designed by him.

“It was interesting but not decisive in my decision [to take the United job]. It’s probably the only time where you go somewhere as an intern and go back as the head coach of the first team.”
