Lille striker Jonathan David has said what Rúben Amorim will want to hear as Manchester United reportedly circle in as a potential destination for the Canadian international.

Manchester United are set to prioritise attacking reinforcements this summer as Rúben Amorim’s side struggle for consistency in front of goal.

Aside from Bruno Fernandes, United’s attacking options have failed to deliver this season, with the front three frequently misfiring. Their inconsistent performances at Old Trafford have only deepened concerns.

During the last transfer window, the club loaned out several first-team forwards, including Antony to Real Betis, Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley to Walsall for the remainder of the season.

However, United opted not to bring in any attacking replacements, leaving fans frustrated. The club’s only January signings were left wing-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.

David addresses future desination

Lille striker Jonathan David will be on the move this summer after he confirmed that will leave the Ligue 1 side at the end of the current campaign once his contract expires.

According to multiple reports, David is a player United want, with one report earlier this year claiming Amorim’s club are “seriously considering” a swoop for the 25-year-old forward.

Speaking to The Overlap US, David opened up on where he would want to play next, and although he said he would like to play in La Liga one day, he would be open to adapting to any league, name-dropping the Premier League as a potential destination.

“To be honest, I think I can adapt to every league. Every league has their differences. I think the Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than all the other leagues,” David said.

“But I grew up watching a lot of La Liga. I wouldn’t say that would be my preferred league, but I think that’s a league that I enjoyed watching the most… I think one day, I would like to play there. But will that happen? I don’t know. I’m not opposed to anything, and we’ll just see where the future takes us.”

David continued: “I’ve had difficult moments, especially my first season and even my first two seasons at Lille. I think I had a dry spell, but now I’m scoring so much.

“But for me in those situations, it’s about putting your focus on the work, so doing extra after training and always working hard, and knowing something will happen.

“Knowing I’ve put the work in gives me more confidence on the pitch, knowing that I did what I could, so I have no regrets. Normally, I’m more of a reserved, shy guy, but moving to different countries makes you evolve as a person and makes you come out of your shell. You have to get involved.

“As a player, everywhere you go you have to adapt because the culture is different, the playstyle is different, the players are different are there are different expectations of you.”

This is what Amorim will want to hear

While David did not comment on whether or not he would be open to joining Manchester United specifically, the point he made about being willing to adapt is something Amorim and his side will want to hear.

There have been questions surrounding whether United would be limiting themselves in the future if they sought to sign players who only work in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

However, both the head coach and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe have explained previously that they want to sign adaptable footballers.

Due to the nature of Amorim’s system, some who thrived under Erik ten Hag have found themselves on the outskirts of the team, with those such as Tyrell Malacia and Rashford set to be sold this summer, while there have been questions surrounding where Kobbie Mainoo can fit in midfield.

However, with David showing himself to be a fantastic goal-scorer but a player also willing to adapt to demands, this puts him in good stead to be a summer candidate for United and Amorim.

It also helps that, as the Canadian will be a free agent, he will not command a transfer fee, which helps United’s tight financial situation.
