Arne Slot has confirmed that one Liverpool star will miss their upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United after an injury on the weekend.

Manchester United’s first fixture of the 2025 calendar year comes in the form of a crunch Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The two sides are having polar opposite seasons despite appointing new managers in 2024, with Arne Slot joining Liverpool last summer and Rúben Amorim joining United in November.

Liverpool are sitting pretty at the top of the league table with 45 points after 18 matches, while Amorim’s men are in a lowly 14th place with just 22 points.

Liverpool’s inform winger Mohammed Salah is tearing the league apart, which is causing many United fans to fear a potential repeat of the 7-0 thrashing United had at the stadium during Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge.

Slot confirms Liverpool injury blow vs United

Liverpool rounded of their 2024 calendar year with a thumping 5-0 win over West Ham United at the London Stadium – the same venue United fell to a 2-1 defeat in October that triggered Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Although the fixture was almost perfect for the Merseyside team, Slot confirmed that they had suffered an injury blow after the game, with star centre-back Joe Gomez departing the field after just 37 minutes.

As quoted by Liverpool’s official site, Slot said of Gomez: “You saw today an injury of Joe Gomez. If a player says he wants to stop, he has to be changed.

“In a sprint, then we all know it’s a hamstring and we all know it’s going take a while before he is back. I don’t know how long but he will be out for quite a bit.”

This confirms that Gomez is set to miss the fixture that sees Amorim’s United travel to Liverpool.

United must leave their poor form in 2024

With the new year always comes new beginnings, and Amorim will no doubt be keen to see his squad improve once January hits.

United are not expected to be too active in the January transfer window as lack of funds prohibits them from making significant signings, but the squad themselves must up their game and leave their poor performances in 2024.

“If we are to make the long-term changes that we want to make to Manchester United, then we have to go through that step by step,” Amorim told club media ahead of their final fixture of the year against Newcastle United.

“We are looking to implement a new way of playing at the busiest time of the year, so there are short-term costs for our long-term aims.

“I will say, though, that the players are working hard to take on and use all the new information and instructions they are getting. The longer they do this, the easier it will become for them, and then the comfort and confidence in our game will grow.”
