Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has made a controversial claim about one Manchester United star but Bruno Fernandes has shut him down.
After enduring their worst-ever Premier League season last year, Manchester United were in urgent need of top-quality reinforcements this summer.
Ruben Amorim has been handed a completely rebuilt attack with the arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
Although United faced problems across the pitch last term, their biggest weakness was a lack of firepower. The Reds managed just 44 goals in the league.
Cunha has been tipped by many as the perfect kind of player to take the step up to United but some others have concerns over his temperament.
Cole makes controversial claim about “fantastic” United star
Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has been speaking about United’s transfer business on TNT Sports and he has expressed those concerns about Cunha’s supposed attitude problems.
In what felt like a lazy and uninformed argument, Cole suggested that United should be staying away from players with Cunha’s personality.
“The thing that worries me about Cunha – I think he’s a brilliant player, a fantastic player, wonderful goals and he does everything – but whenever you hear little things about his attitude,” said Cole.
“I’m not saying he’s a bad lad because I wouldn’t want to say that but he’s a bit of a maverick. I’ve heard people talk about that and the last thing Man United’s dressing room needs is another maverick.
“Putting stuff on social media and all that, players unhappy, you hear too much coming out of that dressing room so it’s a gamble with Cunha.”
The Brazilian international has received a negative label after a couple of incidents last term at Wolves, one of which saw him take the glasses off an Ipswich Town staff member in a heated exchange between the two teams.
Fernandes shuts down Cunha criticism
Most of the time, people argue that United players must have the personality to deal with the pressures of playing at Old Trafford but those players are also criticised. Bruno Fernandes is the main example.
The club captain himself has shut down the criticism of Cunha from Cole and others already, stating that he is settling in with the new group and is a ‘very loud and happy’ character.
“We know most of the Brazilian people are very loud and very happy! He’s one of that, he’s a very funny guy. He’s come into the group very well,” explained Fernandes in pre-season.
“He’s settled very quickly with everyone, which is very good because we need him at his best, we need him to create this connection with every player to get the best out of him, but also the team.”
All of the noise around United suggests that the dressing room is all pulling in the right direction, but these criticisms of Cunha were unfortunately predictable.
