Jamie Carragher launches passionate defence of Manchester United man, he is spot on
It is not often you see Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher defend anyone associated with rival club Manchester United.
Manchester United supporters are normally seeing Jamie Carragher mock Gary Neville about the club on Sky Sports but he has decided to come to the defence of under-fire Rúben Amorim.
The Portuguese boss has had a terrible start to life at Old Trafford, winning just four of his opening 11 games and sit seven points away from the relegation zone.
Next up comes an away fixture against Carragher’s own team Liverpool, who are flying at the top of the table with just one defeat all season. Far from an easy contest.
It comes as a surprise to no one that Amorim’s methods are already being questioned by the media, with the 39-year-old quickly learning about the nature of English media.
Carragher comes to defence of Amorim
However, Carragher has actually come to the defence of Amorim and launched quite the passionate defence of the United head coach.
The ex-defender believes that the new INEOS regime at Old Trafford have ‘a lot to answer for’ after they backed Erik ten Hag so heavily in the summer only to completely change their approach to appoint Amorim.
He believes that the higher-ups at United are the ‘architects of this mess’ and not Amorim, who has been receiving criticism.
“United might have found the right man for the job and hired him at the worst time,” said Carragher in his column for The Telegraph. “The club’s hierarchy has a lot to answer for.
“Appointing the prime target as soon as possible is understandable. What is harder to explain is this: how could you have given a £200 million budget to a lame-duck coach who plays 4-2-3-1 four months before recruiting a manager who plays three central defenders and wing-backs?
The Manchester United executives in charge of football operations are the architects of this mess, not Amorim. Technical director Jason Wilcox said when he took the job he wanted the same system replicated across every level of the club.
“How does that work when you are backing a manager with such a vastly different system to the one you have just sacked? The United hierarchy knew the risks of asking Amorim to take over straight away because it is obvious the current squad are not set up to play his way.”
Carragher is spot on in Amorim assessment
It is fair to say that Carragher is spot on in his assessment of the situation at United, with major question marks having to be placed over the way INEOS handled the situation.
It is even more concerning that, for many, this was an entirely predictable situation. Ten Hag was never going to get the entire season if things stayed the same and then a manager was going to be brought into a difficult situation.
Amorim’s tactical approach makes that even harder and the hierarchy will have to realise that they’ve caused the mess United find themselves in right now.
Trust has to be given for Amorim, who would love the same financial support that his predecessor received in order to move closer to his ideal setup. Whether that actually comes is unfortunately uncertain.
