Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has demanded that Rúben Amorim sell one Manchester United star who is “not good enough” to justify staying.

Manchester United are set to enter a crucial phase under new head coach Rúben Amorim as the club prepare their 2025 transfer strategy.

After multiple summers of lavish spending under former boss Erik ten Hag, the club are flirting dangerously close with the Premier League‘s profit and sustainability (PSR) rules, and will have to sanction sales to make any big purchases.

While Amorim wants to sign at least four new players across the coming windows, much of the focus has been on who the club could dump, with many fans feeling that a significant portion of the club could be set for an axe.

While they have been crucial in recent seasons, players such as Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martínez have been touted for potential moves, with Amorim considering only a select few at the club as ‘unsellable’ at Old Trafford.

Carragher’s transfer demand

Another man who has made headlines in the last few days is Marcus Rashford, who is reportedly up for sale this summer.

It has been claimed that United may be willing to part with their Academy graduate for as little as £40 million in 2025, despite valuing him at around £80 million mere months ago.

Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher has now suggested that United should bite the bullet on Rashford after he has not been good enough after signing a five-year deal in 2023.

“Given how many signings have dropped in value since joining United, it does not surprise me that big names such as Marcus Rashford are being linked with a move,” Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column.

“United should sell him as he is not delivering value for his lucrative contract. Eleven goals in his 48 league appearances over the past 18 months is not good enough.

“There has been too much of a pantomime around Rashford for the last few seasons, the promise he showed when breaking into the side not realised. He is 27 now and should be in his prime. In a front three, Rashford is the third attacker. United will never win the Premier League or Champions League if he is leading the line.”

Rashford’s sale is attractive to United as any amount they receive would go down as pure profit on the books. It’s a move they are familiar with, having sold Scott McTominay for £30 million to Serie A side Napoli in August 2024.

Rashford’s sale would help the club distance themselves from heading over the PSR threshold, where they could face a fine or points deduction.
