“absolute revelation” Jamie Carragher raves about new Manchester United star amid Erik ten Hag’s transfer update

Jamie Carragher has been raving about an “absolute revelation” at Manchester United as Erik ten Hag confirms the transfer latest out of Old Trafford.

Manchester United opened the 2024/25 Premier League season with a narrow 1-0 win against Fulham at Old Trafford.

In a game that tested their resolve, debutant Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to make the difference, slotting home Alejandro Garnacho‘s cross to secure the victory.

Though the result was encouraging, there were instances during the match that left United fans anxious. Erik ten Hag will no doubt be keen to address these issues as the season unfolds.

Although many eyes were on the two new debutants, Zirkzee and right-back Noussair Mazraoui, Carragher chose to focus on another relatively new addition to the United squad – Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo broke through the club just under 10 months ago, making his debut in a 3-0 win over Everton in November 2023, when he was named Player of the Match.

Since then, the 19-year-old has continued to excel in every occasion he has played, whether that be in the Premier League, FA Cup finals, or European Championships with England. Speaking during United’s win over Fulham, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher heaped praise on the English midfielder.

“I think he has been an absolute revelation. I love watching him play and what he did in the summer,” Carragher said of Mainoo on Sky Sports.

“He came through last season, we were asking questions about United’s midfield. It was Casemiro needs a partner, now it’s Mainoo needs a partner. I think he is going to be a superstar”. 

Meanwhile, Ten Hag was questioned by former United captain Roy Keane about whether he wants any more players this summer. The Dutchman explained that although he is happy with his team, he knows the side cannot stop in the market.

“We cannot stand still, but also it depends on what happens in the market,” replied Ten Hag. “I’m happy with the squad, and when we have this squad, I am quite confident going into the new season.”

United have been linked with new midfielders in the past few weeks, with many saying that Manuel Ugarte is the club’s top target in the position.
