Jamie Carragher issues scathing verdict of Rúben Amorim ‘disaster’, explains secret reason why Man Utd haven’t sacked him

Jamie Carragher has given his damning verdict on Manchester United’s managerial situation after Ruben Amorim’s disaster at Old Trafford.

After a victory over Chelsea earlier this month, Manchester United turned their attention to Brentford as they looked to win back-to-back Premier League fixtures.

This would’ve been the first successive league wins in Ruben Amorim’s reign; however, the Red Devils fell short of the mark as they suffered a 3-1 defeat.

A quick brace from Igor Thiago saw the host sprint into a 2-0 lead, before Benjamin Šeško pulled one back with his first goal in a United shirt.

Brentford then capped off what was a dismal afternoon for United with a third and final goal, as a Mathias Jensen strike flew past Altay Bayindir. This result has added to the already existing questions surrounding Amorim’s future as they prepare to face Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Carragher’s verdict on Amorim

When speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher raised the question as to why Amorim is still in a job, explaining he feels it may be because United’s decision makers don’t want to admit they’ve made another mistake.

The pundit said, “I think he is still in a job because I think the powers that be at Manchester United have made that many mistakes so far with the decisions they have made on and off the pitch that they do not want to admit right now that they have made another.

“This has been a disaster for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim. What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic. He looked like the next big thing as a manager.

“But bringing a manager like that in with the system he plays, I don’t think ever suited a club like Manchester United with the traditions at Manchester United.

“The quicker they make the decision on the manager, the better for everybody, because like I said, it has been a disaster for the club and the manager.

“We are just waiting for the inevitable, unfortunately, because you don’t want people to lose their jobs. But this has to end as quickly as possible.”

Amorim’s stubborn system

As Carragher continued to say, the United squad may be better suited to a different formation entirely, as they “have not gone all in” on Amorim’s system yet.

“The players they have brought in could easily be flipped into a back four with Bruno Fernandes as a No 10, Mbeumo on the right wing, Cunha on the left, Šeško up front, and I think a competent Manchester United manager could get that team into the European places or certainly be fighting for them,” he continued.

“You don’t want to see anybody lose their job but I think it would just be better for everyone if they just shake hands and move on.”

It feels as if Amorim is on borrowed time at the moment as the United manager, but hopefully, he can find a way to get the best out of his talented stars before it is too late.
