“He will know more…” Manchester United legend disagrees with Jamie Carragher’s Bruno Fernandes transfer claim
Recently, Jamie Carragher boldly claimed that Manchester United should sell Bruno Fernandes, but one Manchester United legend completely disagrees.
Rúben Amorim has spent the last five weeks getting to grips with Manchester United’s squad after succeeding Erik ten Hag as head coach at Old Trafford.
In his first eight matches, Amorim has overseen four wins, one draw, and three losses across all competitions. While the results have been mixed, his tactical identity is beginning to take root at the club.
Key players like Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, and Noussair Mazraoui have flourished in their new roles, forming the backbone of Amorim’s team and cementing themselves as undroppable under his management.
Amorim has also faced several challenges during his opening weeks but has handled them with poise and professionalism, laying the foundations for a new era at United.
Carragher claimed United must sell Fernandes
Writing in a recent Telegraph column, former Liverpool centre-back and famed football pundit Jamie Carragher claimed that United must sell club captain Fernandes for the better of the team.
“Fernandes has been one of United’s best players during a tough period and would have shone with more quality around him during his Old Trafford career,” Carragher started.
“But he is 30 now and there may be value in offloading him to raise funds. Amorim may see it differently and believe a few more years of Fernandes alongside shrewd additions will serve the team better.
“Selling must be a consideration, however, because Fernandes is one of the few players who can attract a significant fee if profitability and sustainability rules are an issue.
“I’ve always felt Fernandes is a great talent rather than a great player. He creates a lot of chances but can be very indisciplined with and without the ball. That makes it a lot harder for United to defend as a compact unit as he chases the ball all over the pitch.
“It looks like great commitment to the supporters but the manager will be tearing his hair out.”
United legend completely disagrees with Carragher
However, legendary United striker Teddy Sheringham was in complete disagreement after he was asked directly how he felt about Carragher’s comments.
No, I think Fernandes has reacted very well to the new manager coming in,” Sheringham told Genting when asked if this was the kind of bold move United must sanction to succeed. “I wouldn’t sell him as Carragher has suggested.
“Obviously, being a fellow Portuguese, I think it does help, so Bruno can understand exactly what he wants, and he probably knows by watching his old club Sporting Lisbon, what the manager is all about.
“He will know more about him than the average player at Manchester United, so I wouldn’t get rid of Fernandes. I think he’s stepped up to the plate and I think he’s one to build a team around as well.”
