James Tarkowski shouts 11-word X-rated message to Harry Maguire after Everton penalty controversy
Manchester United secured a 2-2 draw against Everton in their Premier League clash, with a controversial VAR decision in the final moments shaping the outcome.
Everton dominated Ruben Amorim’s side in the first half, with Beto netting the opener and then Abdoulaye Doucouré adding another, as United’s defence struggled, resembling a Championship-level performance—or worse.
United showed little improvement after the break, but a moment of brilliance from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick pulled one back, injecting some much-needed energy into the team.
Manuel Ugarte then fired in a well-taken half-volley to equalise, with substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Chido Obi making a noticeable impact.
In the dying minutes, Everton were awarded a penalty after former Red Ashley Young went down in the box following what seemed to be a foul by Harry Maguire.
However, after a VAR review, referee Andy Madley was advised to conduct an on-field check, ultimately overturning his initial decision and sparing United from defeat.
Tarkowski jokes with Maguire after penalty controversy
Everton’s last-minute penalty has caused controversy, with David Moyes bemused at how they came to the decision.
It even caused debate amongst the players until after the game, with United and Everton stars discussing the incident in the Goodison Park tunnel.
Maguire was in conversation with Toffees goalkeeper and England teammate Jordan Pickford. Steven Railston noted that the United centre-back admitted to being “surprised it was overturned”.
The Premier League’s rulings for “clear and obvious errors” have been regularly criticised as it does not always seem to allow enough leeway for incorrect decisions to be overturned.
As Maguire and Pickford continued to debate the decision, Everton defender James Tarkowski came out of the dressing room to have some playful fun with his United counterpart.
Simon Peach claims that Tarkowski joked and shouted over towards Maguire: “H, you better get out of here now. You s*** yourself!”
It was also explained that Young was chatting to some of his former colleagues at United afterwards. Some have criticised the veteran for over-exaggerating the contact – something that was often accused of him during his time at Old Trafford.
United have been on the end of several poor VAR decisions this season, and this time they had some fortune on their side to secure a point away from home.
Amorim gives assessment on penalty controversy
Amorim made his feelings clear on the incident when asked about it by journalists after the game.
The Portuguese manager was introduced to the physical levels of the Premier League in a tough away clash against Arsenal, where Mikel Arteta’s men used some dark arts to score twice from set-pieces.

But after that game, Amorim did not complain and instead suggested that his team need to be more physical. He has reiterated that stance when assessing the minimal contact for Young to fling himself to the floor.
“I think from what I saw… I didn’t see it quite well but it was a little bit [of a] soft touch and we are in England,” he said. “So you guys enjoy a lot the physicality of the game, I think. But I think it was clear to overturn it.”
