Jadon Sancho has released a statement after he was unable to reach an agreement for a permanent transfer to Chelsea, who have now paid Manchester United £5 million to opt out of an agreement.
Manchester United loaned Jadon Sancho to Chelsea at the start of last season, with the Stamford Bridge club initially agreeing to a £25 million obligation to make the move permanent.
Sancho had fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag after publicly accusing the United manager of using him as a scapegoat. Following the fallout, Ten Hag froze him out of the squad, limiting his involvement to pre-season appearances before his temporary move to Chelsea.
Earlier this year, reports suggested that Chelsea could opt out of the permanent deal by paying a £5 million penalty fee to United.
David Ornstein has now confirmed that Sancho will not be signing for Chelsea on a permanent basis, as both parties failed to reach an agreement on personal terms. The deal collapsed after Sancho refused to lower his wage demands to fit within Chelsea’s salary structure.
Sancho releases statement after Chelsea departure
Sancho managed to score in the Europa Conference League final for Chelsea last month but his form during his time at Stamford Bridge was not hugely consistent.
He started brilliantly but then tailed off before picking up his game towards the end of the campaign, and that wasn’t enough for the Blues to break their wage structure.
Still, the 25-year-old seems to have had a good time at the London-based club and has released an appreciative statement on his social media channels.
“Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — teammates, staff and the fans,” the United player posted on Instagram.
“Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, Thank you Blues.”
Sancho’s future depends on wage demands
Sancho’s future right now is extremely unclear. Only one destination seems to be off the cards: Manchester United.
But even if the Reds can agree a transfer fee to sell Sancho, his options will be limited if he does not budge on his wage demands, which are rumoured to be over £200,000-per-week.
If Chelsea cannot offer him that, then it is unlikely any other club in Europe does and perhaps a move to Saudi Arabia will be on the cards.
Should a deal not materialise in the coming weeks, it is unclear if Sancho will be part of the pre-season plans at Carrington under Ruben Amorim.
