Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes that one Manchester United star can benefit from one of his teammates suffering injury.
Manchester United have had a difficult season so far and Ruben Amorim has had to deal with several problems since he arrived.
Injuries have been aplenty at Old Trafford in recent months and the new United boss will be hoping that his squad is fully fit heading into the final stretch of the season.
The likes of Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw recently returned to team training. Meanwhile, Amad could be back in action before the end of the season.
Lisandro Martínez is the only player who is guaranteed to be missing for the remainder of the campaign after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament earlier this year.
Stam believes Yoro will benefit from United injury
Martínez, 27, had made a positive impression under Amorim as the left-sided centre-back, with his on-ball ability being useful when stepping out of the backline.
However, while his injury has been a blow, ex-United defender Jaap Stam believes it will give Yoro the opportunity to get more minutes and improve.
“Lisandro Martinez being injured could work out well for Leny Yoro and that’s just how football works sometimes,” the Dutchman told Makthavare.se.
“He will want to play and get minutes and now he will get more opportunities and more experience. That will make him a better player.
“Having said that, it’s a shame to see Martinez injured because I like him as a defender, although everyone has had their struggles in the new system I think he will be an important player for the club again when he is fit.”
Yoro comfortable on left side
Yoro has looked impressive when he’s played on that left side and will be hoping to make the position his own heading into the final months of the season.
While the defender is right footed, he sees “no problem” with his abilities on the left side and explains that he is comfortable in both positions of the defence.
“Honestly, I like both, you know,” Yoro told club media when asked about his preference.

“On the left, I can go ahead with the ball, and in the right… Of course, in the left, sometimes you need to use more your left foot, but… It’s not really a problem for me, so… I feel good in both.”
After returning from a small injury this week, Yoro will be hoping that he can start against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday in United’s return to action.
