Mason Mount was arguably the standout player for Manchester United during their pre-season tour and he earned a start against Arsenal in the Premier League opener.
Manchester United lost their Premier League opener with Arsenal despite being the team who deserved to come out of the game on top.
There were several impressive performances, including from Mason Mount, who started the game as the left-sided no.10 while Matheus Cunha played upfront.
Mount’s time at Old Trafford so far has been far from perfect but for the start of this season, he looks fit and ready to deliver.
Against the Gunners, it was not only his work off-the-ball which stood out, but also some moments of quality in possession, such as an inch-perfect through-ball for Bryan Mbeumo in the first half.
Mount reveals one thing he’s receiving at United now
Mount’s biggest issue since his arrival at United in 2023 has been injuries. He has missed 50 games through various setbacks in the last two years.
But last term, after returning from an injury in March, he managed to keep fit until the end of the season while getting 14 consecutive appearances.
That was the first time he had played in that many games for the club without suffering any kind of setback and he believes that has been key to his confidence ahead of this season.
“It gave me so much confidence,” the midfielder told club media. “It was so important for me to really have that run of games to finish that season because I hadn’t had that before.
“It was so important to know that I can do that and, really, that my body feels in such a good place to be able to do that.
“Now, I feel even better going into this season. I really looked at little things here and there that helped me last season and now I keep doing those things this season, and add even more to get to another level.
“I am really feeling good, I am in a good place.”
Mount will keep Cunha on his toes
If Mount can keep a similar performance level moving forward, he will certainly give Amorim some selection headaches this season.
Cunha is the obvious choice as the left-sided no.10 but that United frontline is flexible and it is unlikely that Benjamin Šeško starts every single game.

Having players like Mount, who have underperformed in recent seasons, improve their levels is crucial if United want to have a strong season.
While the likes of Cunha and Mbeumo clearly have the quality and talent, they cannot become complacent and Mount seems like he’s going to make sure they won’t be.
