Ruben Amorim has been told that he lacks leaders in his Manchester United dressing room amidst their issues on the pitch.

Manchester United have been having a season to forget in the Premier League this season, sitting 14th in the league standings.

Ruben Amorim will be hoping that positive campaigns in the FA Cup and Europa League can put a positive spin on the season, but there is still much work to be done.

The United head coach took over in November but has faced major difficulties in implementing his preferred style of play.

Only a few players have shown the ability to thrive under Amorim, and two of them – Amad and Lisandro Martínez – have been ruled out with injury for the rest of the season.

Macheda says Amorim only has three United leaders

Former United player Federico Macheda believes that Amorim can become a success at Old Trafford despite his difficult start to life there.

However, Macheda also believes that the United boss will need more leaders in the dressing room to see major improvement.

At this moment in time, the ex-United forward believes that Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire are the only players who can be considered as leaders at the club.

He suggests that many of the other players at Old Trafford are not ready to play for United.

“I believe yes he can [be successful]. Amorim has a special connection. He’s one coach that can get Manchester United to fight for everything,” Macheda told The Sun.

“I like Amorim even if you don’t see the results, maybe sometimes they play bad football. It’s difficult because for a club to be successful, you need great players.

“United doesn’t have the team at the moment to win the Premier League. They have good players but if you put any coach in, it wouldn’t change a lot.

“There are only a few leaders: Bruno, Maguire, Lisandro. But it’s not enough. Maybe the others are not ready to play for this club.”

United strategy unlikely to bring leaders in

United could certainly do with some more leaders, but there are question marks over whether they will sign them with the strategy INEOS want to employ.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team want to stray away from signing older players – they have, so far, not signed a single player over the age of 26.

Three of their summer signings were 23 and under and Matthijs de Ligt had only just celebrated his 25th birthday the day before he signed for the club.

Noussair Mazraoui is the club’s oldest signing under INEOS – joining at the age of 26 – but he was also the cheapest summer addition.

While buying young could be a good strategy considering the circumstances United find themselves in, it is unlikely to bring in more leaders to the team, which could be a problem.
