Manchester United’s legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was critical of the Reds after a 3-0 thrashing in the Manchester derby.
Manchester United’s season has not got off to the flying start fans will have been hoping for, so far they have four points in four games in the Premier League, and if today’s game is anything to go by then they will struggle to break that trend until some serious changes are made.
There have been criticisms of Ruben Amorim during his time at United, with some saying his refusal to deviate from his set ideas and formation, even when his team are losing so heavily, could end up costing them valuable points.
This seemed to be proven through the Red Devil’s 3-0 loss in the Manchester derby, by the end of which, the United team seemed uninspired, lacking conviction in the final third.
Legendary ex-United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel was unimpressed with the club’s performance today too, he said to Premier League Productions: “Looking at the [United] team I can’t help but feel it’s moved nowhere. It’s just the same. Manchester City didn’t need to play exceptionally well…”
A formation change?
Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation has failed to take at United, with the Portuguese manager winning just eight league games since taking over last year.
In the wake of another heavy defeat, many fans are questioning one key thing- why is Bruno Fernandes being played so deep?
He is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world, so it rightly confuses fans seeing him struggle to effect the game from his more defensive role, with the Daily Star capturing some reactions on social media:
“There’s a weird naivety about Man Utd allowing a coach to play out his 3-4-3 experiment when it clearly isn’t working,” one fan sighed. While a second said: “Amorim just unsuccessfully turned Bruno Fernandes, the best creator in the world, into a defensive midfielder…”
“I really don’t understand Amorim, this system is built for Bruno Fernandes to play 10, but he plays him as a pivot,” a third fumed. As a fourth posted: “Sack Amorim now that it’s not too late, he’s no the guy to rescue this team…”
And another added: “It was too late to sack him in April, it was too late after the final, it’s very late now still. Ruben Amorim is a pathetic incompetent charlatan that has no place at Man Utd anymore!”
Or a manager change?
In the wake of this latest defeat, Amorim has doubled down, committing to use his signature style, as per The Standard United’s manager said: “When I want to change my philosophy, I will change; if not, you have to change the man.”
Although he has gotten off to a nightmare-ish start this season, Amorim continued to show his love for the club: “my message is that I’m going to give everything. I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club.”
He continued: “So, I see the record, I understand the frustration of everybody and I understand any decision that came with that. But that conversation about the two midfielders, the pair, Kobbie (Mainoo) and I understand all these narratives. But then, when I look at certain games, we play with two, it’s the same thing.
“I’m trying to do different things, trying to imagine the game, and then when it doesn’t work, you take the critics. But that’s it.”
