“It’s fair game…” Rio Ferdinand weighs in on Paul Scholes and Lisandro Martinez feud following Man Utd victory

Rio Ferdinand has decided to have his say on Paul Scholes’ feud with Manchester United ace, Lisandro Martinez, following the Reds’ derby day victory.

Over the weekend, Manchester United put their rivals, Manchester City, to the sword as they produced a fantastic display to send themselves up to fifth in the Premier League.

One of the standout stars from Michael Carrick’s first game in charge was Lisandro Martinez, who reminded the United fans exactly who he is following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Martinez’s performance may have been fuelled by the comments made by United legend Paul Scholes, who had much to say regarding the Argentine’s height.

The central defender kept Erling Haaland at bay, despite Scholes saying that the Norwegian powerhouse, ‘would score, then throw him in the net’.

Scholes’ feud with Martinez contines

Scholes and Nicky Butt both got personal with Martinez on their ‘The Good, The Bad & The Football’ podcast, which caused quite the stir online, via The Mirror.

Following the Reds’ victory, Martinez was asked about the pair’s comments, to which he stated that he didn’t ‘care’, before inviting them to his house for a face-to-face solution.

Scholes and Butt have since responded, telling the Argentine to ‘grow the f*** up’, before adding, “He’s had one brilliant game, but when you start talking and shouting your mouth off, this game has a habit of coming and biting you back on the a***.”

This has led to fellow United legend Rio Ferdinand weighing in on the situation, stating on Rio Ferdinand Presents, “I think there has been this week some stuff that has probably been just over borderline, personal.”

Ferdinand has his say on United drama

Ferdinand continued to back up Martinez by saying, “I’ve spoken to Martinez a few times, face-to-face and online, and do you know what? He’s someone who just wants to do well, he’s someone who just wants to win, he’s someone who just wants to get back to the standards that Man United were at.

“He’s eager to understand what that looks like. He’s even invited me to come into the training ground, to go for a coffee, whatever, just to sit.

“I think he’s a sponge; he wants to work, he wants to learn. The way he plays, I feel, is the way he is, and he’s an honest character and a good sort to have in the changing room, it seems from what I hear from people around the place as well.

“I think he’s within his rights, if something’s got on his nerves and he’s come out and said it. The way it’s been taken, I think, is probably a bit out of context.

“What I would say is, I think when you’re talking about people, as long as you feel you could say the same thing in front of them, and you’d be happy to say it in front of them with your chest out, then it’s fair game.”
