“It’s disappointing…” – Manchester United loanee suffers ‘challenging’ injury setback

One of Manchester United’s loanee stars has suffered a ‘challenging’ injury setback after being forced off with an injury on Wednesday night.

During the course of Ruben Amorim’s first season as the Manchester United manager, he endured an injury crisis which saw him turn to his academy players on numerous occasions.

Academy prospects were brought into the frame both in the Reds’ Premier League and Europa League campaigns, and often provided a silver lining on what was a poor season.

One of the youngsters who featured for Amorim on several occasions was Toby Collyer, who registered 13 appearances for the senior side.

Despite these appearances, Collyer was always bound to suffer from United’s reduced fixture schedule this season, which led to him leaving on a season-long loan to West Bromwich Albion.

Collyer suffers setback

Collyer joined the Baggies in the final days of the summer transfer window and had finally earned a starting spot before he suffered an injury setback last month.

The United loanee was forced to miss four matches for Ryan Mason’s side, before he re-entered the frame with substitute cameos against both Oxford United and Coventry City.

He was rewarded with a start against Birmingham City on Wednesday night, however, the 21-year-old was forced off through injury in only the 11th minute.

This setback will be quite the annoyance for Collyer, who seemed to have finally earned the trust of his manager. Mason provided an update following his side’s 1-1 draw.

Mason provides Collyer update

Following the draw with Birmingham during the week, Mason confirmed the injury setback to United’s young loanee, and provided an update on when assessments can be expected.

“It’s a muscle injury, yes. I think it’s challenging for him, it’s disappointing,” Mason said via Manchester World. “He had a few last season at Man United, that’s why I was very patient with him this season because I wanted to give him the best opportunity to grow into the demands of this league.

“But for something to happen after 11 minutes, it’s disappointing. It looks like it (a hamstring issue). We’ll assess him in the next couple of days and see where we’re at with that.”

Hopefully, United’s midfield talent can be fit and firing again in the near future, as he was clearly beginning to work his way into Mason’s plans.
