Darren Fletcher sends a pretty blatant dig at ex-Man United manager, Ruben Amorim, when discussing what tactics and ideas he believes are best for the team to succeed.
Darren Fletcher made his managerial debut last night at Turf Moor, where his Manchester United side came away with a frustrating 2-2 draw.
His side were poor in the first half of the game; despite having ten shots more than the opposition, they were unable to find the back of the net. They also went in at half-time 1-0 down after an unfortunate deflection from Ayden Heaven that parried the ball into his own net.
However, United were able to flip the script in the second half thanks to a Benjamin Sesko double before the hour mark, giving his side the lead and himself some much-needed confidence in front of goal.
Unfortunately, similar to many games this season, United were unable to maintain their hard-fought lead as Burnley found an equaliser, which ended up being the final blow of the match.
There are positives and negatives to take from Fletcher’s debut in the hot seat, and as the debate of whether sacking Ruben Amorim was correct goes on, Fletcher sneakily put his two pence into the argument.
Fletcher sends dig at Amorim
Darren Fletcher rivalled the previous ideology of Ruben Amorim, as he opted for a back four, changing from the back three that Amorim had sworn by for his entire tenure.
As relayed by CaughtOffside, when discussing his decision to make the immediate switch to a back four, Fletcher said, “It is what I have always played in my career, it’s synonymous with Manchester United, and it suited the players tonight for this game.”
The former United midfielder claimed that a back four formation is way better suited to Manchester United, stating that it is ‘synonymous’ with the club.
He also highlighted that it is used throughout the academy and throughout the history of the first team.
Shea Lacey also sends message to Amorim
Shea Lacey has become something of a household name at Carrington, with many waiting for his time to shine in the first team after he lit up the academy level.
Although Ruben Amorim gave the youngster his first-team debut in the 2-1 loss away at Villa Park last month, the Portuguese boss then refused to give him any minutes in the following three matches.
In the absence of both Amad and Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim chose to play Patrick Dorgu, rather than putting his faith in Carrington’s top prospect.
Last night, Fletcher gave Lacey his second appearance as he came on at 2-2 with United in dire need of a difference maker. Lacey rose to the occasion, hitting the crossbar from a wonder strike within his first few touches, and being inches off target from outside the box again in the closing minutes of the game.
Despite some positive signs to take from the game, United still failed to get three points, sparking more uncertainty around the board’s decision to part ways with Amorim.
