One manager has confirmed his intention to sign one of Manchester United’s forgotten stars next term with a potential loan exit on the cards.
When Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho broke into Manchester United’s first team, a few other promising talents appeared ready to follow in their footsteps.
One of them was Dan Gore, who earned his senior debut under Erik ten Hag in September 2023 after impressing behind the scenes. The dynamic midfielder had captained the Under-21s and was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022.
Gore joined United from Burnley in 2018 and was widely tipped to become the next academy graduate to establish himself at Old Trafford. Coaches even drew comparisons to club legend Roy Keane due to Gore’s all-action style in midfield.
With intense competition for places in the first team, a loan spell was deemed the best path for Gore to gain valuable experience. He joined Port Vale in January 2024, but injury setbacks meant he made just a single appearance. A freak shoulder injury then ruled him out of the start of the following season.
United attempted another loan move in January 2025, this time to Rotherham. However, injury problems persisted, with a foot issue limiting him to just a single appearance for the League One side until the final two games of the season.
He played in both of those games and impressed on the final day against Peterborough. Gore will need a strong campaign next term if he wants to save his United career.
Managers confirms intentions to sign ‘tenacious’ Gore
There has been rumours about a potential permanent exit for Gore but Rotherham manager Matt Hamshaw seems desperate to take him back on loan in League One.
Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, the Millers boss explained how the club are in ‘regular communication’ with those at Old Trafford and that he is ‘confident’ they are one of the favourites to sign Gore.
“We’re in regular communication with Manchester United,” said Hamshaw. “They’re seeing what happens with their pre-season and we’ll go from there.
“I think that, if he does come out, we’ll be near the front of the race. I’m hoping it’s before the start of the season but with these things you never know. It could happen tomorrow, it could happen in three weeks.
“I really like Dan. I like his attitude, I like his commitment, I like his tenacity, I like his work ethic, I like everything he represents.”
Gore’s focus should be getting consistency
It has been a really difficult spell for Gore in the last two years and it is easy to forget how close he was to first-team status at Old Trafford.
Still only 20 years of age, the midfielder has the opportunity to try and bounce back on loan. If he can get a full season of professional football under his belt then you can’t predict what will happen for him afterwards.
But his long-term future shouldn’t be too much of a concern going into next season, with Gore simply in need of getting from game-to-game and getting that consistency.
There is no doubt about his abilities on the pitch, but the youngster needs to showcase it on a weekly basis and it looks like he could be doing that at Rotherham next term.
