One pundit has been completely slammed after Manchester United’s incredible victory over Lyon in the quarter-final of the Europa League.
Manchester United’s remarkable comeback against Lyon will go down as one of their most unforgettable performances in recent times.
The Red Devils started strong, with early goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot giving them a 2-0 lead. But defensive lapses in the second half saw Lyon claw their way back, and momentum seemed to shift away from United.
Despite Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso being sent off for a second booking, the French side struck twice in extra time—first through Rayan Cherki, then via an Alexandre Lacazette penalty after Luke Shaw fouled Fofana.
With six minutes to go, Casemiro was brought down in the box, and Bruno Fernandes confidently converted to make it 4-3. In the 120th minute, Casemiro flicked the ball brilliantly to Kobbie Mainoo, who slotted in the equaliser.
Just a minute later, Casemiro whipped in a perfect cross from the left, and Harry Maguire headed home at the back post, sealing a sensational victory for United.
Casemiro produces incredible display vs Lyon
Casemiro was mentioned a lot in the previous paragraphs and that’s because he turned into a man possessed in those final 10 minutes. Winning and penalty and getting two assists.
The Brazilian midfielder has been crucial for Ruben Amorim in Europe. Initially, when the Portuguese boss took charge, it seemed like the 33-year-old would rarely touch the pitch.
But he has learned how to adapt the veteran’s role to get the best out of him and he’s actually been very consistent this term.
The early part of his campaign seemed to be defined by a nightmare display against Liverpool but you could easily argue that his performances across the entire season have been almost as good as his first at the club.
So many criticised him last season but the longer time goes on, the more you think that it was Erik ten Hag’s approach, with wide open spaces in the middle, which made the midfielder look worse.
Carragher slammed and told to apologise to Casemiro
The display from Casemiro on Thursday night, simply described as “incredible”, has reminded quite a lot of fans about previous comments from Jamie Carragher.
At the end of last season, the ex-Liverpool player told Casemiro “to leave the football, before the football leaves you” – it was incredibly disrespectful at the time and now it looks ridiculous.
United fans are making their feelings clear about the comments from Carragher, including claims that the pundit should make an apology to the Brazilian.
One fan posted: “I’m still and have for a year straight been waiting for the Jamie Carragher apology video to Casemiro. Still and has been for some time our best central midfielder.”
“Casemiro my guy was simply outstanding tonight and hopefully Jamie Carragher was watching tonight’s game,” another said.
A third added: “Jamie Carragher might need to issue an apology to Casemiro.”
