Bastian Schweinsteiger has sung praise of one of Manchester United’s star players as he discusses his best position under head coach Rúben Amorim.
Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was recently quizzed in an interview at Heineken’s Champions League Trophy Tour about his former side, to which he had some notable things to say.
The German only spent a brief part of his career at United, as he featured 18 times in the 15/16 Premier League campaign, scoring once and assisting once.
During a period when he was widely regarded as one of the world’s best, Schweinsteiger played for Bayern Munich from 2002 to 2015, during which he won numerous accolades at both club and international levels.
The 40-year-old’s trophy cabinet included one Champions League title, one World Cup, eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cup trophies, and more while at Munich, before winning the Europa League, an FA Cup, and an English League Cup with United.
Schweinsteiger waxes lyrical about Mainoo
Just from seeing his trophy cabinet, it is clear that Schweinsteiger knows what it takes to be a top-level midfielder, which means that his praise for United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo will be highly valued.
When asked about his favourite midfielders, the German powerhouse mentioned the likes of Rodri, Vitinha, and Frenkie de Jong, before speaking highly of Mainoo, stating that he is a very intelligent player.
Schweinsteiger then went on to say about United’s Academy star, “I like Kobbie Mainoo very much. I think his best position in an Amorim team is as a number eight; he’s a very intelligent player with the capabilities to push forward. So yeah, I think the number eight role would be the best one for him.”
In a season where Mainoo has often been injured or poorly profiled, this praise from a midfield legend will be music to the ears of the upcoming 20-year-old talent.
Can Amorim get the best out of Mainoo?
So far under Rúben Amorim, Mainoo has struggled to fit into the unique 3-4-3 system, often finding himself playing as a left-sided ten, which doesn’t always get the best out of the youngster.
This has led to uncertainty surrounding the future of United’s young star, as it is still remains a mystery as to whether Amorim’s system and Mainoo can co-exist harmoniously.

Despite early struggles, Mainoo has recently returned to the frame and shown what he is capable of. His recent equaliser in the 120th minute against Lyon is a prime example of this.
Heading into the summer, one of Amorim’s main tasks will surely be to find a way to consistently get the best out of the young Englishman, as he looks to continue putting the world on notice as to what he is capable of.
