INEOS have had a clear transfer strategy since they arrived at Manchester United but they could be about to break that this summer.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS took charge at Manchester United in early 2024 and are now in their third transfer window, which is also the most important.
One thing that became immediately clear was that United were no longer going to be signed older players who were past their prime.
During the first summer window, five players were signed and three of those were 23 or younger. Matthijs de Ligt had only just turned 25 while Noussair Mazraoui was 26, but also cheapest signing of them all.
In January, that trend continued with the additions of Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu, aged 18 and 20 respectively.
Even when considering some more experienced forward players this summer, Matheus Cunha (26) and Bryan Mbeumo (25) both seem to fit into the age-bracket which INEOS want at Old Trafford.
INEOS could break United transfer strategy
Any links to experienced players have been few and far between, but there have been shock reports in recent days suggesting that United could sign Emi Martínez from Aston Villa this summer to replace André Onana.
The 32-year-old has become a highly-rated shot-stopper at Villa Park, labelled as world-class by some, and is reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer.
United are aware of this interest and have spoken with the goalkeeper’s representatives about potential terms. Talks with Aston Villa are yet to take place.
With a deal potentially set to cost between £30-40 million, Martínez would become the first player over the age of 26 in the INEOS era to be signed, and he is soon to be 33 years of age.
While the general consensus is that goalkeepers can play at the top level for longer periods than outfielders, Martínez already seems to be on the decline and there have been some complaints about a potential deal.
Martínez noise coming from his camp
As things stand, the noise around Martínez seems to mostly be coming from his camp as they look for a potential move this summer.
MailSport reporter Nath Salt has revealed that Martínez’s agents have been ‘working overtime’ to ensure it is known that their client is eager to join United.
But right now, there has been no approach from United and the indication is that Onana will remain at Old Trafford next season.
Onana remains unpopular within the fanbase due to some high profile errors but it also seems like spending £40 million on a near 33-year-old isn’t the right move either.
