Harry Kane has revealed his thoughts on a possible return to the Premier League amid links to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Harry Kane is one of the greatest strikers to have ever played in the Premier League, and is part of a rather unfortunate club of brilliant stars to have played in the English top flight but never lifted the trophy.
Alongside names such as Steven Gerrard, Gareth Bale, and Luis Suárez, Kane is widely known as one of the best goal scorers to have graced the English game, sitting second on the all-time Premier League goalscoring list with 213. At the same time, he also holds England’s goalscoring record internationally.
However, after a 19-year career with Tottenham, from their youth Academy to the first team, he left to sign for Bayern Munich in a £80 million deal back in 2023, when Manchester United were also very much interested under Erik ten Hag.
He has since scored an astonishing 103 goals and registered 29 assists in just 106 appearances for the Bundesliga giants, scoring 18 goals in 10 games already this season.
Kane diminishes chances of Premier League return
It has been widely reported that Kane would like to try and finish what he started in the Premier League and break Alan Shearer’s 260-goal record, and amid his release clause dropping to £57 million in January, has been linked with moves to both United and Spurs of late.
However, in a recent interview, the 32-year-old has admitted he no longer has the same drive to return to England, and would be open to extending his contract in Munich instead.
“In terms of staying longer, I could definitely see that,” Kane said. “I spoke openly a couple of weeks ago that I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they were to arise, I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation.
“Obviously, it depends on how the next year or so goes and what we achieve together. Right now, I would say we are in a fantastic moment, and I am not thinking about anything else.
“In terms of the Premier League, I don’t know. If you had asked me when I first left to go to Bayern, I would have said for sure I would come back.
“Now I have been there a couple of years I would probably say that has gone down a little bit, but I wouldn’t say I would never go back.
“What I have learned in my career is that different opportunities and different timings happen, and things fall in place. Going back to my first point, with Bayern right now, I am fully all in with Bayern.”
Kane is a one that got away for United
While many of the greatest players to play the game have passed through the doors at Old Trafford, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir David Beckham, there are plenty of names that never donned the Red shirt, but feel as if they would have in another life.
The aforementioned Welsh legend Bale is one of them. At the same time, the infamous story of how close Ronaldinho was to signing under Sir Alex Ferguson before opting for Barcelona still haunts the halls at Old Trafford, but Kane is another one.
While United’s most significant push for Kane was in 2023, it was not the first time they had looked to bring in the striker. They were linked with the Walthamstow-born star almost every summer since 2015, and had he joined the Reds at any point, their future may have been drastically different.
Ironically, Kane would likely be a perfect player for Amorim within his current set-up. The English legend can drop deep and link up play, which would be helpful for the likes of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while he could also get on the end of many Bruno Fernandes deliveries.
United have had a wavering goalscoring problem for over a decade, with no single striker consistently providing goals over a sustained period. While there is hope that Benjamin Šeško can become that player in the future, Kane could have been that Old Trafford star over the past 10 years, but never was.
