Matheus Cunha completely agrees with Bruno Fernandes with a ‘star man’ claim which shows why Ruben Amorim wanted to sign him.
Manchester United have secured the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and the forward is expected to officially complete the move this week.
The 26-year-old went off on international duty with Brazil and managed to provide the game-winning assist during their 1-0 victory over Paraguay.
After netting 15 goals and registering six assists during the Premier League last season, Cunha is viewed as a player who can help turn United’s attacking unit around.
However, there shouldn’t be an expectation for him to become the star man at Old Trafford – there should be shared responsibility within the team.
Cunha speaks about being a star man in attack
Despite his standout performances at Wolves and clear self-belief, Cunha insists he doesn’t want to be seen as the star of the team. Instead, he hopes to be remembered for his quality and relentless work ethic.
“I don’t want to be the star man, I want to be someone important for the people to remember, I do something good for them,” the Brazilian previously told the BBC.
“I want to do everything to show everyone, ‘I will fight for you inside of the pitch’, doing some magic moments for them.”
Cunha is a flair player who thrives on taking games by the scruff of the neck, but above all, he is a team-first footballer—an attitude that closely mirrors the message recently shared by United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes shares same message as Cunha
Fernandes, United’s standout performer once again last season, secured both of the club’s Player of the Year awards. Yet, the Portuguese midfielder made it clear he would prefer not to win such accolades – if it meant others around him were raising their levels.
“We were talking about the awards and they were saying like, ‘oh, who’s gonna win the award of Player of the Season?’, they were kind of putting a joke,” Fernandes told TNT Sports recently.
“And I said that I hope next year I am not even involved in the name – and do the same season as I did this year, and not be involved in the name of winning that trophy because that will mean you step up, Amad will step up, Garnacho will step up, Rasmus will step up.
“If they start scoring goals, start doing assists, start running backwards and tackling, they will be the ones having attention and not me, and I will be the most happy person in the world.
“I’m there to help my teammates get the best out of them and that’s all I want to do because I know as soon as I can get the best out of them, my team will be much better.”

The reality is that United’s top players can’t carry the club alone. They need others around them to raise their game. That’s exactly the mentality Amorim is trying to instil, and it’s why Cunha’s attitude and ability made him a priority signing.
