New Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has suggested that Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf could be swapped as the country’s captain.

Tomasson, 47, left his role at Championship club Blackburn Rovers earlier this year to take up the managerial position for the Swedish national team.

The European side have underwhelmed in recent years despite have a talented crop of players in their ranks.

Change is expected with the Danish manager in charge, with the 47-year-old promising an attacking style of play for the nation going forward.

He has also addressed other changes that he could make, such as the captaincy. Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf has held the armband since 2021.

However, Tomasson has stated that he will meet the entire squad before making a “concrete” decision on who will be captain, suggesting that Lindelöf will not simply keep the armband because he has it right now.

“All the things like captain and how we are going to play, I will be very concrete about when we get a little further along,” he told reporters.

“I first have to meet the players and after that I will be very concrete in my statements about what I think about the situation.

“First of all, (they need) to show leadership, that is the more important thing. The second is, and it applies to everyone, that you play with honour and are proud to play for the national team.

“I have heard from many in the organisation that the Swedish players really love playing for Sweden. It’s very good, you need to have it and show it on the pitch.”

Lindelöf has made 64 appearances for Sweden since his debut in March 2016. The defender joined United in the next year under Jose Mourinho.
