Amad has explained what he wants to see himself doing more often following Manchester United’s fantastic 2-1 win over Liverpool last week.
Amad has had a very mixed start to the season as he adapts to a new position under Rúben Amorim.
Much like Manchester United, the Ivorian international’s form has been up and down, with the 23-year-old producing some fantastic moments when the side plays well, but some equally questionable displays.
After spending the early years of his career as a winger, Amad has found himself playing as a wing-back under Amorim. However, in his recent fixtures, he has played an incredibly attacking role alongside Bryan Mbeumo on the right-hand side.
Amad has also been battling with personal problems following a family bereavement. Still, his performance against Liverpool showed a player returning to his very best after a slow start to the campaign.
Amad wants to secure more assists this season.
United’s most recent game, a stunning 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield—their first at the ground in almost a decade—saw Amad combine to near perfection with Mbeumo from the opening minute.
After Bruno Fernandes picked the ball up in the middle of the park jsut secodns into the game, Amda found himself one on one agisnt Milos Kerkez.
The Ivorian then spotted Mbeumo’s run past Virgil van Dijk through the middle, and produced a perfect outside-of-the-boot pass with his left, as can be seen in the above photo, to tee his teammate up for the opening goal just 72 seconds into the tie.
Although some databases have Amad as down with two assists this season, the first was winning the penalty that Fernandes converted against Burnley in August. This would therefore make his pass to Mbeumo his first open-play assist this season.
Speaking to club media after the win, Amad was congratulated for his assist. The young star explained that he wants to tally up more this season as he also searches for his first goal for the campaign.
Asked how his assist made him feel, Amad replied, “Yeah, good, good feeling. First assist of the season. I want to have more this season. Yeah, good feeling, but the special one [feeling] was the win as a team. That was the most important thing.”
Mbeumo and Amad’s partnership could become essential
When United brought in Mbeumo for an initial £65 million fee in July, many questioned if the signing was even necessary, considering that Amad had just come off the back of a stellar season and clearly had the talent to become a talisman for United.
Then, during the initial games, when it felt as if the duo—Mbeumo playing further forward and Amad at wing-back—were getting in each other’s way, Amorim could have made a mistake with his recruitment.
However, in the last two fixtures, this has flipped on its head. Against both Sunderland and Liverpool, Amad and Mbeumo looked more in sync and better at understanding each other’s positioning and roles.
If Amad wants to collect more assists this season, he could become an essential provider for Mbeumo, which is precisely what the Cameroon international will want to hear.
