“I think we’re in the right way” – David de Gea is positive about Manchester United’s future
David de Gea has put United’s successes this season down to Erik ten Hag, the mentality of new signings, and the squad’s togetherness.
David de Gea paints the picture of United having a happy and concentrated environment, which seems to have been cultivated by Erik ten Hag.
The Spaniard only had positive words in his recent instalment of ‘Teamviewer Diaries’ and he believes that the trajectory of the club is only pointing upwards, saying:
“We’re playing well, a great team spirit, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets.” As you’d expect, De Gea emphasised the importance of not conceding, continuing to say, “That’s super important for us. I think we’re in the right way.”
De Gea currently has five clean sheets in 14 games in the Premier League this season, which is just three away from the eight that he managed to record in 38 games last campaign.
These numbers back up the 32-year-old’s words, and Ten Hag’s high-pressing play style seems to be the change that has helped United’s previous defensive struggles:
“He [Ten Hag] brought his new ideas to the players at the club, we are adapting to them. I think we are pressing high, keeping the ball, trying to play forward all the time and dictate the game.
“We’re winning games, fighting for every point. We need the whole squad to be together, to train properly, to help each other and that’s what we’re doing. We’re fighting for each other, not just the defenders, the whole team is defending really well.”
Ten Hag, when he first joined United, made sure that his signings shared the same mentality and ideology to win at all costs. This has since been seen in Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and new world champion Lisandro Martinez, who all readily put their bodies on the line for the badge.
De Gea admires the new faces at the club and appreciates the drive they bring to the squad.
“They brought a lot of experience and passion to the club, a desire. All of them want to win, which is the most important thing. Quality players, we sound really good players.”
It’s refreshing to hear for the fans especially, as in previous seasons the club has not shown itself to be the most productive work environment. However, it seems that Ten Hag has got everybody singing from the same hymn sheet, with all aiming towards the same goal: to bring success and silverware to Manchester United.
