“I think if…” Wayne Rooney states that Michael Carrick’s Man Utd future depends on ONE circumstance

Wayne Rooney has given his verdict as to whether he believes Michael Carrick is the man to take the Manchester United managerial position, stating that it depends on one circumstance.

Since taking over from Ruben Amorim, Michael Carrick has surprised the masses, accumulating 19 points from a possible 24, as well as winning matches against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Manchester United have climbed up to third in the Premier League following this recent resurgence, which leaves them in a great position as they pursue a spot in next season’s Champions League.

The Reds suffered their first defeat under Carrick last week, as they fell short to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, although they will hope to make amends this weekend.

Next up for United is a home test against Aston Villa, who sit level on points with Carrick’s men. Wayne Rooney has given his verdict on whether the Englishman should be rewarded the job permanently following his fantastic start.

Rooney on Carrick’s chances

Speaking on The Overlap, via a UtdDistrict post on X, Rooney spoke on his former teammate, claiming that he should be in ‘pole position’ for the job if he achieves UCL football.

Rooney said, “I think if they get UCL football, he should get the job.

“He puts himself right up there if they’re looking for new managers. But he definitely puts himself in pole position, I think.”

It would be hard to argue against Rooney given the start that the 44-year-old has made to life in the Old Trafford dugout, but only time will tell whether his side can continue their fine form.

Tough tests on the horizon

Following a fairly friendly run of fixtures, United’s trip to the Magpies was the start of what will likely be a tougher run of matches for Carrick’s side, including a couple of vital six-pointers.

Over the course of the next month, the Reds only have four matches to play, although two of these are against their top-four rivals, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

As well as this, United still have yet to face Liverpool at home, which may also be a crucial fixture in their bids of returning to the top European stage.

Having managed to beat both Arsenal and Manchester City in his first two fixtures, Carrick will be desperate for his side to continue taking down England’s elites as he puts his name in the hat for the permanent United job.
