I played with Viktor Gyökeres and think his preferred transfer is Manchester United
Sporting striker Viktor Gyökeres is rumoured to be one of Manchester United’s main transfer targets next summer.
Manchester United are actively seeking to sign a new striker in 2025, as goals have been hard to come by under Ruben Amorim so far.
Rasmus Højlund, despite scoring five in his first five games under the 39-year-old coach, has gone seven matches without a goal, starting in six of them.
New signing Joshua Zirkzee has managed just three goals, two coming in a 4-0 win over Everton, while Marcus Rashford looks set to depart this month.
United have been heavily linked with Viktor Gyökeres, Amorim’s former striker at Sporting CP. The 26-year-old scored 62 goals for club and country in 2024.
He started 2025 with a hat-trick against Vitória S.C. in the Portuguese league and has since scored in the next two games against Benfica and FC Porto.
Murray on Gyökeres‘ rise since Brighton stint
Gyökeres came to everyone’s attention during his time at Coventry City but he also had a spell at Brighton beforehand which was less successful.
He struggled for game-time at the Amex Stadium during a period where Glenn Murray was the starting striker for the Premier League outfit.
The 41-year-old has reflected on Gyökeres’ time with The Seagulls and praised him for his drive to improve and prove people wrong since then.
“You could see that there was a desire and a hunger and the capability for him to become a full-time professional player and make it in the game,” Murray told 10bet.
“He’s smashed every question down so far, so he definitely deserves his chance in the Premier League, and I think with his confidence and ability he would be a success.
“Did I see it coming what has happened? Probably not. It just shows what belief in yourself, other people’s belief and confidence can do for you. I think the way he’s worked it and what he’s done, it’s pretty much the perfect blueprint for any young professional that might not be ripe to burst into the Premier League.
“Let’s face it, very, very few are at such a tender age. To have a few loans, to go out to Coventry, which was the right fit for him, and the team was built around him to score goals, and then the move to Sporting. When you go to a league like that, you’ve been backed. They paid a lot of money for you, you’re going to get your time, you’re going to get your chance.”
Murray predicts United will sign Gyökeres
After his former teammate’s success in the Portuguese league, Murray now believes it is time for Gyökeres to move back to England and test himself in the Premier League.
He also believes that Gyökeres’ relationship with Amorim makes a move to Old Trafford to reunite with the 39-year-old the preferred transfer.

“He’s taken it with both hands and now the next step is one of the big leagues in Europe,” continued Murray.
“Hopefully that is the Premier League. Obviously, with his old manager being here, its quite likely that if he does decide to come here, Manchester United are going to be his preferred destination.”
United will not move for the 26-year-old this month, but a deal could be made when the summer transfer window comes around.
