There is a lot of speculation about the Manchester United manager’s position as Erik ten Hag’s job becomes increasingly under pressure.

Wednesday afternoon brought news that Jose Mourinho wants to return to Manchester United as he feels he has “unfinished business” at Old Trafford.

Mourinho was sacked in 2018 after a harrowing loss to Liverpool in December of that year, and although Erik ten Hag is currently at the helm, poor performances this season mean there is a real chance that he will be sacked.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are the new boys on the block who will likely make that ultimate decision, and speaking in 2018, Ratcliffe expanded on his thoughts about many of the current top managers in the game.

“I am a season ticket holder at Chelsea,” Ratcliffe told the Telegraph in 2018. “Have been for years, although I’m a Manchester United fan really. Or was…. It’s not getting any better [at United]. It’s gone from bad to catastrophic. Talk about a glass half empty.

“If you’ve got the six teams competing at the top of the table – this is last season anyway – you’ve got three who are managed by glass-half-full guys, [Jurgen] Klopp, [Pep] Guardiola and [Mauricio] Pochettino. They get their teams up and energised.

Ratcliffe went on to single out Mourinho, who was still in charge of United at the time, explaining that the Portuguese manager “destroyed Luke Shaw” – a trait he seemingly did not like.

“And then you look at Mourinho. He’s so down. He destroyed Luke Shaw last season. And then you’ve got [Arsene] Wenger, who [was] miserable, and [Antonio] Conte, who was down.”

Finally, he also revealed one manager that he loved: “The guy I like is [Diego] Simeone,” he added. “I love him.”

Simeone has made his name as an incredibly pragmatic but inspiring manager at Atletico Madrid, leading them to glory in La Liga, but rumours have been flying around regarding his future.

He has been linked to United before, but so far, there has been no real noise as to who may replace Ten Hag, should the Dutchman be let go.
