“I know they are…” Sheffield Wednesday boss reveals exactly how Man Utd feel about Harry Amass loan progress

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has revealed how Manchester United feel about Harry Amass’ progress at the club on loan.

Harry Amass joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan during the summer transfer window after it had been decided he would not take part in pre-season with Rúben Amorim’s senior squad, despite featuring seven times for the Manchester United head coach last season.

Diego Leon was brought in to replace Amass as Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu’s understudy at left wing-back following his move from Paraguay.

Although Leon has made the United bench on occasion, much of his time at Old Trafford has been spent with Travis Binnion’s under-21s as he continues to adapt to life in Manchester. There are also reports that he may head on loan to OGC Nice.

While Leon is only just beginning to show flashes of his potential, Amass has been producing consistently impressive performances in the Championship, even while playing for a club dealing with administration and strict transfer restrictions.

For Amorim and United, that situation has worked out well. Amass has become a key figure for Wednesday, operating as a left wing-back in a defensive back five, and the regular experience in that role should prove invaluable when he returns to Old Trafford this summer.

Pedersen reveals United’s Amass thoughts

While some questioned whether Amass’ loan to Wednesday was the right idea considering the club’s financial turbulence, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has revealed that the Manchester side are “very happy” with the teen’s progress this campaign.

“I know they are very happy, and, of course, they have to be very happy,” Pedersen told The Star. “He is in a team that has a lot of trust in him and who work very, very seriously with him as a part of the team, but also individually.

“He also has a group of fantastic mirrors in our team [in the form] of the senior players, where he can learn a lot.

“He is in a good group where he has a big respect around him, and we have big respect for Man United giving us the possibility [to sign him], and I am sure they have big respect for how we have worked with him.

“I hope we can continue [to work with him] after January. Of course, he fits well in our way of playing, he is developing well, and I cannot see any reason not to do it.”

Amass could have clear first-team run next summer

There has been a signifiacnt amount of talk about United’s wing-backs in the last few months, with all options bar Amad putting in mixed shifts under Amorim.

Dorgu, Diogo Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui have all shown flashes of decent football on the right and left flanks, but overall, it has become increasingly clear that the Reds need a more decisive and reliable attacking outlet on the left to complement Amad on the opposing flank.

If Amass can continue his brilliant form in the Championship, there is no reason why he couldn’t challenge for a first-team spot in the summer during pre-season, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon.

While Denmark are yet to qualify, should they do so, Dorgu would be occupied, while Leon could also head to the United States this summer with Paraguay. This would leave Amass as Amorim’s first-choice left wing-back for the first few weeks of pre-season training, giving him a free run at the spot.
