“I just hope…” Rio Ferdinand backs £60m Man Utd ‘top player’ to be ‘like a new signing’ for Ruben Amorim

Rio Ferdinand has backed one of Manchester United’s stars to be a ‘new signing’ for Ruben Amorim in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

Manchester United’s 2024/25 campaign was one to forget on all fronts, with Ruben Amorim’s side going trophy-less, as well as finishing in 15th in the Premier League.

This disappointing season called for immediate change, and has seen the Red Devils bolster their attack heavily through the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and, potentially soon, Benjamin Sesko.

Despite all of these improvements to their attacking arsenal, United look like they could enter the new campaign without any sort of midfield or defensive reinforcements, which will be interesting to see.

However, one player who could help Amorim’s side next season in the midfield department is Mason Mount, whose time at the club has been nothing short of turbulent since joining for £60million two summers ago.

Ferdinand backs United’s forgotten man

When speaking to talkSPORT, United legend Rio Ferdinand spoke highly of the former Chelsea midfielder, and even mentioned an encounter they had previously experienced on the Reds’ pre-season tour.

Ferdinand said, “I saw him out in Chicago, and one of the things I said to him was, ‘How are you feeling?’ Because he’s been robbed of any minutes, really, for injury. It’s been really, really disappointing to see.

“Being injured and in the shadows, I never had that at a new club. That is so depressing. It can take your soul away at times. I’m sure he’s been in some dark moments.

“He will be like a new signing. I think this is no surprise. Whenever he’s been fit in his career, he’s played, at Chelsea especially. Managers have played him when they won the Champions League. He was one of the most important players.

“He has the quality. He has the work ethic. He has the legs. He has the ability to be a really, really good top player. I just hope he gets the time to play minutes to show himself.”

How can Mount help Amorim?

Having been so successful during his time at Chelsea, many thought that Mount would hit the ground running for United, but unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case for several reasons.

Whether it be injury, confidence, or changes at the club, the English midfielder has yet to find his feet in Manchester. However, with a goal against Everton in pre-season, hopefully, this could represent a turning point.

Amorim’s two-man midfield has been questioned thoroughly since his arrival as the United manager, but could Mount give the Portuguese tactician some food for thought?

The 26-year-old has played in a similar role for Chelsea before, featuring in both Graham Potter’s and Thomas Tuchel’s pivots at times.

If he can stay fit, next season could be the start of a new chapter for Mount, and he could solve a lot of problems for Amorim as a result.
