Nemanja Vidić gave his opinion on Manchester United’s summer signings and said what Rúben Amorim’s goals will be for this season.
Manchester United have missed out on several opportunities to cement themselves in the top four, with back-to-back disappointing results against West Ham and Everton leaving them in sixth place.
Despite this, they still sit just one point behind Crystal Palace in fourth. Just four points separate Newcastle in 12th from Palace in fourth, leaving the race for the top four as open as it has ever been, so United’s missed opportunities could come back to bite them at the end of this Premier League campaign.
After overcoming United’s worst-ever start to a season, Rúben Amorim’s men have certainly improved, with new summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens both drastically improving the side.
With AFCON getting underway in just over a week, United will be without their Cameroonian star, as well as Noussair Mazraoui and Amad, who has developed a great chemistry down the right flank with Mbeumo.
Nemanja Vidić on Amorim’s main aims for this season
Speaking to CBS Sports Golazo, Man United legend Nemanja Vidić was asked to compare his time at the club to his former side’s current struggles, while also expressing what Amorim’s targets for this season will be.
“To be fair, when you [are] speaking about my time recently, we [were] always competing [and] won the big trophies, playing Champions League finals, three times, five league titles.”
“So, it’s [a] very successful era. But if you look at the Man United [sides] in the last few years, we are struggling to compete on a big level.”
“Obviously, this season I think his target is to play European football and move from there.”
Vidić on Man Utd’s new signings
The club entered the transfer window with a clear goal: to solve last season’s problems in front of goal. After managing just 44 Premier League goals in the previous campaign, United invested £214 million to overhaul their attack completely.
While Mbeumo has certainly hit the ground running, sitting on six goals and one assist, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško have not enjoyed the same success when it comes to goals and assists, but the improvements are there for all to see.

While he didn’t score or assist, Cunha was pivotal in his side’s famous win over Liverpool earlier in the season, while Šeško is still adapting to the demands of the Premier League. At the other end of the pitch, Lammens has shored up a position that hasn’t instilled confidence in the fanbase in recent seasons.
On the club’s new signings, Vidić said: “Obviously, the signings we have this season, I hope that they’re going to settle fast and they’re going to be the players that they’re going to take us to the better days because we need players to be consistent.”
