“I feel…” Matheus Cunha explains why he thinks he can become Rúben Amorim’s perfect Man Utd player

Matheus Cunha has opened up about adapting to life under Rúben Amorim following his £62.5 million move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Manchester United.

Matheus Cunha’s first few weeks at Manchester United have been what most would consider a dream start for players at clubs.

His £62.5 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers was completed in mid-June, giving the player a stress-free few weeks of holiday, before allowing him to arrive at Carrington for his first few days of training.

Cunha has been able to spend this maximum amount of time with his new teammates and under coach Rúben Amorim, and is expected to feature in every pre-season fixture before the new season starts.

With the 26-year-old currently expected to become the first-choice option on the left flank, he has the maximum amount of time at his disposal to settle into life at Old Trafford.

Cunha speaks on adapting to Amorim’s system

A significant reason for United being so keen on signing Cunha is that the Brazilian international is a perfect fit for their head coach. Having played for two and a half seasons in the Premier League with Wolves, he’s proven himself to be a fantastic forward who can play both on the left and up front.

At Wolves, he played in a similar 3-4-3 to what Amorim applies at United, and recently spoke to club media about how important it is that he understands his role well, but still has much to learn.

“Of course, this is something very important,” Cunha explained. “I think I’m one of the options because I play already in this kind of systems.

“And, of course, still a lot of things to adapt. Everyone around me is new for me, so it’s a lot of things to learn. But, yeah, I feel very comfortable to be here, to play for this club. It’s something that I feel very privileged.”

Cunha understands he needs to control his temper

Cunha has made himself a key figure in the Premier League, not just with his Brazilian flair and goalscoring prowess, but also by being known as a bit of a hot head.

His temper became a key point of discussion in the last campaign after he was handed a multiple-game ban following a confrontation with then-Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, who has since signed for Liverpool.

Cunha went on to explain that he knows he plays football with a lot of emotion, but he will work hard to ensure his energy and fight are channelled into his performances.

“This is something that, yeah, sometimes it’s very good and that’s not the best way to do, but I’m very emotional,” Cunha admitted. “I agree with this, I can show all my emotions in the game.

“I [always] give my 100% and maybe more because I love this game. Like I said, it’s a privilege to play for this team.

“I have a beautiful career, but of course, when you start here, in other clubs, we show already our emotion. Here, I hope I can control a little bit more, but from my side, I always think to be here and try to give 100%.”
