One Serie A star that has been linked to Manchester United in the past has spoken on his future after being nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or
After scoring just 44 goals in last season’s Premier League campaign, Ruben Amorim overhauled Manchester United’s attack, spending £214 million on a new forward line that brought Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Šeško to Old Trafford.
Concerns between the posts also prompted action. With both André Onana and Altay Bayındır at fault for goals in the opening four matches, United turned to highly rated Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, signing him for £18.1 million.
United generated significant funds in the final week of the summer window. Alejandro Garnacho’s £40 million switch to Chelsea was the most notable exit, while Rasmus Højlund’s loan to Napoli could deliver even more, with a £38 million obligation to buy if Antonio Conte’s side secures Champions League qualification.
Further departures included Antony’s £21.7 million transfer to Real Betis which included a 50% sell-on clause, while Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan with a £30 million option to buy next summer. Jadon Sancho also left , moving to Aston Villa on loan with the club covering 80% of his wages.
Denzel Dumfries makes transfer future clear
Despite the club being linked with a potential move for Denzel Dumfries, United didn’t end up making a move for the Dutch international who has shone for Inter Milan, earning a place on the 30-man shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
While on international duty for the Netherlands, the 29-year-old hinted that he would be open to playing in the Premier League in the future.
Speaking to the Metro, he said: “The Premier League is a fantastic competition. I’m happy at Inter, but I think I could also do very well in England. If there were a professional opportunity, I would certainly be interested.
“The Premier League is known for its intensity, while Serie A is known for its tactical ability. These are two different approaches to football. The Champions League, however, always offers exciting clashes.”
Dumfries could be a good option next summer
Considering how important the wing-back position is in Amorim’s tactical setup, many would have been expecting the club to sign a more experienced option rather than the talented, though inexperienced, Diego León.
Diogo Dalot has struggled to adapt to life under Amorim, and many believe that Amad is better suited further forward, rather than being played as a right wing-back.
The Netherlands international was available for as little as £17.5 million due to his release clause in early July before rising to £26 million by the middle of the month.
Despite this, Inter Milan are reported to be willing to sanction a £21.5 million fee for their star player, a very reasonable price tag considering his experience playing as a wing-back and ability, as seen by his stellar performances in Inter’s Champions League final run last season.
