“I am never afraid, brother” – André Onana proves credentials in Erling Haaland interview
Manchester United are looking set to sign goalkeeper André Onana from Inter Milan to replace David de Gea as Manchester United’s new first-choice in goal.
David de Gea has been at Manchester United for 12 seasons, and bar a few rocky moments, has generally been the mainstay No. 1 in goal at Old Trafford throughout his time at the club.
His time at the club has seen him win multiple trophies but has also been layered with constant criticism surrounding his confidence both on the ball and claiming crosses; especially under Erik ten Hag.
Many have pointed out that De Gea often does not claim crosses or engage in one-on-one battles in the area against strikers, but instead prefers to wait for a shot to be hit in order to pull off an often spectacular save.
André Onana, however, is an entirely different kettle of fish.
As an incredibly proactive goalkeeper, Onana will often be found standing on the edge of his area, looking to receive the ball to feet from his teammates and smother attacks before they can even begin with his more ‘modern’ style of play.
This was evident during the Champions League final Inter Milan played against Manchester City, where Onana received plenty of praise for his actions.
In response to the question “If I say Erling Haland, what do you say?” Onana’s answer was simple: “Nothing. What do you want me to say?”
“No fear?” the interviewer then probed further.
“Of him?” Onana replied. “A man is not afraid of a man – why would I be afraid?”
When it was posed that Onana may be afraid as Haaland is one “of the best players of all time,” Onana was further confident in his reply.
“Yes, for sure he is maybe one of the best,” he said. “But do you know who I’m afraid of? God – but I don’t see him on the pitch. So for me, a man does not make me afraid.
Talking further on Haaland, Onana said: “He’s a very good player in a very good team, but they have to show they are the best because we are going to defend Inter. We are going to give everything to win this final.
“[We will do this by] working hard. It is not going to be easy, we are going to do the same that we did in the last games.
“Why would I be afraid? I am never afraid, brother. (laughs)”
Although Inter Milan ultimately went on to lose the tie 1-0 as City secured a historic Treble, Onana’s attitude ahead of the fixture is exactly what Manchester United have been missing.
