“Huge effect…” Ralf Rangnick names key Man Utd aspect that has saved Rúben Amorim’s Europa League campaign

Following a disappointing campaign for Manchester United, former boss Ralf Rangnick named the key aspect that has helped them reach the semi-finals of the Europa League

The 2024/25 campaign will certainly be one to forget for Manchester United, with the side languishing near the relegation spots in the Premier League.

Rúben Amorim was brought in in November to replace Erik Ten Hag to change United’s fortunes in the league, but things have not been plain sailing, picking up just 24 points from a possible 69 in the league.

One of very few positives however is United’s Europa League campaign this season. They go into the second leg at Old Trafford 3-0 up against Athletic Bilbao, with an all English final between United and Tottenham Hotspur looking likely.

Victory in the final is key for United’s future, and Champions League football will be a major factor in attracting potential signings in what will be a crucial summer for the club.

Rangnick’s verdict on United’s season

Ralf Rangnick’s six-month tenure at United in the 2021/22 season didn’t exactly go to plan. Rangnick took over with the thought that he would then go into a consultancy role at the end of the season, but following some controversial post-match conferences, both parties decided not to pursue this.

As reported by football365, via Canal+ Austria, the now-Austrian national team head coach had his say on the key aspect as to how Amorim’s men have one foot in the Europa League final.

“Sure, in the Europa League, they have – usually with the result against Lyon, you are eliminated – they have turned it around. And of course, the stadium had a huge effect.”

While many things about United can be criticised this season, the backing of the fans cannot be questioned. Despite the team being in a perilous situation against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final, they got behind their players and pushed them to make that remarkable comeback.

How important Europa League success is

One key factor that could sway players towards joining Premier League rivals is their guaranteed Champions League football next season. However, they might still consider a move to Old Trafford if Manchester United win the Europa League.

With numerous departures expected this summer, United have been linked with several potential signings, many of whom are only interested if Champions League qualification is secured.

Failure to win the Europa League could seriously limit United’s options, particularly with experienced players who prioritise top-tier European competition.

For Amorim, getting this transfer window right is crucial. Securing Champions League football would be a major step toward rebuilding and restoring momentum at the club.
