How Rasmus Højlund proved Diogo Dalot correct as Manchester United star sees prediction come true
Following Manchester United stars Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Højlund meeting in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, one of Dalot’s pre-game predictions has come true.
Højlund, who has struggled to find the back of the net so far this season, put a 22-game goalless drought to bed in the Red Devils final game before the international break.
However, with players jetting off to represent their countries, if Højlund hoped to build on his goal-scoring run, then he would need to do so against club teammates Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes as Denmark hosted Portugal in Copenhagen.
With the prospect of a face-off against Højlund on the cards, Dalot would joke with reporters about the potential clash, with one of his comments coming true.
What exactly did Diogo Dalot say?
Discussing Højlund’s goal against Leicester, Dalot explained to reporters that whilst he was happy for the attacker, he had hoped that Højlund would fail to repeat the feat this week.
“We were joking this week about Højlund scoring a goal, which he hadn’t done for a while,” Dalot told Portuguese journalists, as quoted via Jornal de Noticias.
“We said to him, ‘Now you have a week off and then you can score goals again.’ It’s a good competitiveness, but from the moment we step on the pitch we’re no longer teammates.”
Though Dalot’s hopes that Højlund would take a week off from scoring were crushed – in an ironic twist his joke that they were no longer teammates came true, with Højlund’s ultimately coming off the bench and winning the game for Denmark against Portugal.
Slotting home a decisive goal in the 78th minute, Højlund’s finish would see Denmark claim a 1-0 victory over Portugal.
A chance at redemption for Dalot?
Though Dalot and Portugal tasted defeat thanks to Højlund’s match-winning strike on Wednesday, Seleção das Quinas will have a chance at redemption on Sunday.
Due to the Nations League quarter-finals taking place over two legs, Dalot and co will hope to turn the tie around in the reverse fixture in Lisbon.
Alongside Dalot and Højlund, other Red Devils stars expected to play in the game include Patrick Dorgu, Christian Eriksen and club captain Bruno Fernandes, with all three featuring in the first leg.
